WFC2 hosts home opener looking for first win as Cascadia rival S2 visits

LANGLEY, B.C. – Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 hosts its home opener at McLeod Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon against Seattle Sounders FC 2, with WFC2 aiming for its first win of the season and S2 looking for back-to-back victories against a Cascadia rival. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. PT.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 news and notes

  • Current record: 0-1-1, 1pt

  • Vancouver earned a 1-1 draw against Reno 1868 FC last Saturday night to claim its first point of the new season at Greater Nevada Field.

  • WFC2 conceded early in the contest, but hit back through Thomas Sanner’s first goal of the season to level soon after. Despite holding a 7-4 edge in shots on target, though, the visitors were unable to find a winner.

  • Vancouver currently sits tied for fourth in the USL in passing completion percentage at 79 percent, and is completing 67.9 percent of its passes in its opponents’ halves.

  • Midfielder Ben McKendry leads WFC2 with five chances created so far this season, with the team overall having created 19 scoring opportunities.

Seattle Sounders FC 2 news and notes

  • Current record: 1-1-0, 3pts

  • Seattle earned its first win of the season last Sunday when it rallied to take a 2-1 victory against the Portland Timbers 2 at Starfire Stadium.

  • T2 took the lead early in the second half through Villyan Bijev, but two goals in three minutes by Seyi Adekoya and Zach Mathers gave S2 the lead midway.

  • Goalkeeper Bryan Meredith preserved the win as he saved a penalty kick by Bijev with just over 10 minutes to go, one of seven saves Meredith has recorded this season.

  • Adekoya’s goal was his first as a professional after signing as a Homegrown Player this offseason with the Sounders.
