Charleston Battery news and notes
Current record: 2-0-0, 6pts
The Charleston Battery recorded their second consecutive win last Saturday night when they took a 2-0 victory against the Charlotte Independence at Transamerica Field.
Romario Williams scored the opening goal, and Forrest Lasso notched his second in as many games to give the visitors victory.
Lasso scored once goal in the 2016 USL regular season, but has connected twice with Justin Portillo set piece deliveries in the new season.
This is the second time the Battery have won their opening two games of the season in the past three years. In 2015 the side started 5-0-2 – including a 3-1 home win against Pittsburgh – before suffering its first loss of the season.
Pittsburgh Riverhounds news and notes
Current record: 0-1-1, 1pt
The Riverhounds fell 1-0 to FC Cincinnati last Saturday as Gale Abbossoumonde’s first half red card saw the side unable to hold on for a second consecutive draw at Highmark Stadium.
Pittsburgh announced on Thursday it had acquired 2016 PDL Defender of the Year Lalas Abubakar on loan from its MLS partner Columbus Crew SC to potentially provide cover.
The Riverhounds are currently last in the USL with a 64 percent passing completion percentage, but the side has recorded a 31.3 percent success rate on its crosses this season.
Pittsburgh faces a busy upcoming week, with a midweek clash against Saint Louis FC at Highmark Stadium being followed by a visit to the Charlotte Independence next Saturday night.
Series Notes
Charleston went 1-0-1 against the Riverhounds a season ago, and is 12-5-10 all-time against Pittsburgh since the club’s first met in 1999.
