Dancing raccoon memes, high-flying goalscorers are making Patriots Point bounce through two months of the campaign

Want to know how much fun the Charleston Battery are having right now?

Cue the Raccoon.

The TikTok meme has become the official social media victory anthem for the current Eastern Conference leaders. The combination of the track – which you can almost imagine Ben Pirmann and the boys blasting from the boombox in the locker room after games – and the raccoon is irresistible.

Which makes it almost like the Battery themselves.

One of the three remaining undefeated sides in the USL Championship after their 6-0 victory against Las Vegas Lights FC on Saturday night, Charleston has taken the platform it built last season and added to it with a nine-game run to start this campaign.

At the forefront is Nick Markanich, who’s gone from an outstanding complementary finisher in his first season with the Battery to the Championship’s leading scorer with 11 goals in nine games – as the club points out, more than anyone else in the country, including some guy down in South Florida.

He bagged a hat trick in the first half against the Lights, looked to his phone at halftime for more encouragement, and then became the first Battery player to record a four-goal performance in the USL Championship era.

“At halftime I always check my phone, my brother and my family were giving me feedback,” said Markanich before heading to the locker room on Saturday. “They told me to keep going and keep getting more, so I’m excited to check my phone again and see what they say and talk to them.”

There’s also MD Myers, who has six goals overall and has matched Markanich with at least one tally in each of the past four victories for the side, and of course fellow newcomer Aaron Molloy, who busted out his attempt at fellow Irish legend Robbie Keane’s somersault and finger-guns after a spectacular finish of his own on Saturday.

Yup, he’s just having fun out there.

The Battery know there’s serious business at hand. While they’re sitting on 21 points, Louisville City FC is three points back with two games in hand in the early stages of this campaign, bringing their own potent attack to the party. There’s still a focus in place that aims to make sure the Battery have a shot at silverware at the end of the season.

“We’re in first place right now because we’ve played more games than everybody else,” said Pirmann. “We’ve got a target on our back, so we have to make sure that we keep getting better because we know everybody else is. When the games even out, they’ll pass us and then we’re playing catch up. We just have to focus one day at a time, one exercise at a time, take care of our bodies, and mentally push to get better and better.”

Sure, OK, you’re the boss.

(Pulls out phone, hits play, starts dancing around Patriots Point… Oh Pedro, Pedro, Pedro!!!)
