SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC announced on Friday the club had acquired defender Michael Edwards on loan from the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer for the 2023 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval and per team policy, terms of the loan were not disclosed.

“We are thrilled to welcome Michael to the team and thank Colorado Rapids for accommodating the loan,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “He has demonstrated to be among the elite centerbacks in the league and will add to our imposing defensive unit. Michael is an ultra-competitor, a superior athlete, dominant in one versus one duel, and we feel a terrific fit for our team identity.”

Last season Edwards made 12 appearances on loan with the Colorado Rapids 2 of MLS NEXT Pro, scoring once. At the end of August, with Rapids 2 eliminated from postseason contention, Edwards was loaned to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC for the remainder of the USL Championship season. Edwards recorded 10 appearances for the Switchbacks, including starting all three of the club’s games in the 2022 USL Championship Playoffs, and recorded 16 interceptions and eight tackles at a 72.7 percent success rate.

In 2021, Edwards appeared in 24 matches (23 starts) for the Switchbacks. In over 2,000 minutes played, he recorded two goals and one assist while also posting 36 interceptions and 35 tackles won at a 74.5 percent success rate, and a duel success rate of 58.3 percent.

Prior to signing with the Rapids, Edwards spent 2018-20 with VfL Wolfsburg in Germany. In the span, he appeared in 14 matches with the U-19 squad and 17 with Wolfsburg II.
