Louisville, Birmingham and Hartford all look to build on Open Cup victories to close the week

Three sides that advanced to the Third Round of the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will be in action on Sunday afternoon as Week 5 of the Championship’s regular season concludes, with Louisville City FC looking to stay undefeated and both Birmingham Legion FC and Hartford Athletic looking to pick up their first league win of the campaign.

Here’s a look ahead to both contests.

Loudoun United FC vs. Louisville City FC

Venue: Segra Field
Kickoff: 4 p.m. ET
Broadcast: ESPN+
538.com Predictor: LDN 22%, LOU 53%, Draw 25%

The Lowdown: Louisville City FC will try to continue its undefeated start to the season as it heads to face Loudoun United FC, with the hosts aiming to rebound from their first defeat of the season. LouCity has drawn each of its past two league contests after a 0-0 draw with Birmingham Legion FC last Saturday, but took a 1-0 win against USL League One club Chattanooga Red Wolves SC on Wednesday night as Wilson Harris recorded his third goal in all competitions this season. LouCity has won two out of three prior meetings with Loudoun, but the hosts have shown better form in the early going this season, starting on a three-game undefeated streak before falling 2-0 away to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC last Saturday night. United will have influential midfielder Sami Guediri available for selection on Sunday after serving a one-game suspension against Pittsburgh as the side looks to claim its third win of the campaign.

Spotlight Players
Loudoun United FC – Tyler Freeman:
The 19-year-old forward struck twice for United in its victory against New York Red Bulls II on March 19 and could be the player to break Loudoun’s two-game scoreless streak.

Louisville City FC – Brian Ownby: The veteran winger has had a strong start to the season, recording one goal and 10 key passes while leading the side with 10 possessions won in the attacking third of the field.

Birmingham Legion FC vs. Hartford Athletic

Venue: Protective Stadium
Kickoff: 5 p.m. ET
Broadcast: ESPN+
538.com Predictor: BHM 51%, HFD 23%, Draw 26%

The Lowdown: Birmingham Legion FC will play host to Hartford Athletic as the two sides both look to build on midweek victories in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Neither Legion FC nor Hartford has taken victory in the league this season, with Birmingham having been held to a 0-0 draw by Louisville City FC last Saturday night despite playing with a man-advantage throughout the second half. Legion FC took a 3-1 victory against Southern States SC Stars in the Open Cup on Thursday as new signing Juan Agudelo made his debut for the club, and the former United States international will be expected to have a positive impact in the attacking third for the hosts, who have only scored twice so far in the league in four games. Hartford also took a 3-1 victory against Oyster Bay United FC on Wednesday night in the Open Cup as Luka Prpa had a goal and assist, and has had prior success against Birmingham, going 1-0-1 in their prior two meetings in the 2019 season.

Spotlight Players
Birmingham Legion FC – Prosper Kasim:
The Ghanaian forward notched his second goal of the season in Legion FC’s Open Cup victory and will look to combine with Juan Agudelo to boost Birmingham’s attacking prospects.

Hartford Athletic – Prince Saydee: The Liberian winger has notched both assists for Hartford this season, and also found the net for the first time for his new club in its Open Cup victory on Wednesday night.
