Colombian Goalkeeper Cristian Bonilla Join San Antonio FC

28-year-old has made more than 200 appearances in Colombian First Division, competed for senior national team


New San Antonio FC signing Cristian Bonilla was included in Colombia's squad for the 2015 Copa America, and has made more than 200 top flight appearances in his home country.

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC announced on Thursday the club had signed Colombian international goalkeeper Cristian Bonilla, pending league and federation approval. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are excited to welcome Cristian to the SAFC community,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “He is an accomplished goalkeeper who is a leader with title-winning experience. His box presence, athleticism, and distribution fit our aggressive style of play. Cristian is a welcomed addition to our goalkeeping core.”

Bonilla brings a wealth of playing experience to San Antonio, having made more than 200 professional appearances in his domestic career and almost 20,000 minutes of action. Most recently, Bonilla played for La Equidad in the Colombian First Division where he started 30 matches in 2021. Overall, the 28-year-old has spent 12 seasons in the Colombian top flight along with one season with Al Feiha in Saudi Arabia. Bonilla is a three-time winner of the Copa Colombia, a three-time winner of the Colombian Primera A Championship and a two-time winner of the Colombian Superliga.

The goalkeeper has appeared in at least 15 matches in a season six times in his career and has played for clubs like Athletico Nacional, Millonarios and Boyaca Chico.

Bonilla has represented his native Colombian at the U-17, U-20, Olympic and full international levels. He made four appearances at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and was also included in Colombia’s 2015 Copa America squad. Additionally, Bonilla has played for Colombia in youth world cups, friendlies and other major tournaments, totaling 30-plus appearances for his country at all levels.
