The 32-team USL Rocket League Tournament will start on Tuesday, March 31 and continue through Friday, April 24. The participating USL Championship and USL League One clubs will be randomly drawn into eight groups of four during the USL eCup draw scheduled for Wednesday, March 25 at 5:00 PM ET. Further details are below:

WHAT IS ROCKET LEAGUE?

The creators of Rocket League describe the game as "a high-powered hybrid of arcade-style soccer and vehicular mayhem with easy-to-understand controls and fluid, physics-driven competition." Essentially, it's a soccer game, but instead of players, users drive around rocket-propelled cars to hit the ball and each other while trying to score goals. The objective of the game is simple, and familiar -- score more goals than the other team.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

The USL eCup is a World Cup-style tournament featuring clubs from both the USL Championship and USL League One.

There are eight groups made up of four teams each. The Group Stage will run from Tuesday, March 31 to Friday, April 10. Teams will be randomly drawn into groups, which will be announced on Wednesday, March 25 at 5:00 PM ET.

During the first week of the Group Stage, each team will play one match. Then, during the second week, each team plays two matches. The top two teams from each group after these two weeks advance to the Knockout Rounds.

The Knockout Rounds will take place between Monday, April 13 and Friday, April 24. During this round, each team will play no more than two games per week.

Each match will be streamed live on ESPN3.

MATCH FORMAT

Each team will have one representative from their roster play in a 1v1 match. During the Group Stage, matches will consist of a best-of-three series, which will last for approximately 15-20 minutes.

During the Knockout Round, matches will consist of a best-of-five series.

The Final will consist of a best-of-seven series.

All games will go to sudden death overtime if teams are tied at the end of regulation for all rounds.

SCORING

In the Group Stage, the winner of each best-of-three series will receive three points, and the loser will receive zero points. The two teams from each group with the most points at the end of the Group Stage will advance to the Knockout Round

The tournament will use Rocket League tiebreakers:

  • First Tiebreaker - Overall Game Differential

    • The total number of Games won by a Team minus the total number of Games lost by such Team ("Game Differential").

  • Second Tiebreaker - Head to Head results

    • Game Differential in Games between tied Teams

  • Third Tiebreaker - Highest Goal Differential in Games between tied Teams

    • "Goal Differential" is defined as the total goals scored by a Team minus the total goals allowed by such Team.

  • Fourth Tiebreaker - Overall Goal Differential in the tournament

A forfeit will result in two 2-0 wins in the best-of-three match for the non-forfeiting team. The non-forfeiting team will finish the match with a +4 goal differential.
