Aaron Long's Road to the U.S. Men's National Team

2016 USL Defender of the Year Aaron Long hadn't represented the United States at any youth level, but on Oct. 16 made his full national team debut after a journey that has skyrocketed in the past two years.

  • Aaron Long played two seasons for FC Tucson in the Premier Development League, helping the team to the playoffs in its inaugural season in 2012.
  • Long joined Seattle Sounders FC 2 for its inaugural season in 2015 after being released by the Portland Timbers, which had drafted him in 2014. At the end of S2's first year, though, Long was again released.
  • Things began to get on track for Long when he joined the New York Red Bulls II in 2016. His play at center back - having previously been mostly a central midfielder - was a revelation and earned him the 2016 USL Defender of the Year award.
  • Long lifted the USL Cup after his standout season for the Red Bulls II as the side claimed the championship with a 5-1 win against the Swope Park Rangers at Red Bull Arena.
  • Long was signed to the New york Red Bulls prior to the 2017 season and quickly established himself in the team's back line. He made his 50th MLS appearance for the club midway through the 2018 season.
  • Long's play for the Red Bulls earned him national attention, and a place in the 2018 MLS All-Star Game that saw him and his teammates square off with Juventus at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
  • Long earned his second call-up to the United States Men's National Team, and made his debut against Peru on October 16 in a 1-1 draw at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.
