Legion FC adds duo to inaugural roster; Steel FC signs international pair

Miller was named preseason Big East Goalkeeper of the Year prior to his senior season at Providence College.

LEESBURG, Va. – Loudoun United FC added a second goalkeeper to its inaugural roster on Wednesday as the club announced the acquisition of goalkeeper Colin Miller for the 2019 USL Championship season, pending league and federation approval.

Miller joins the club after four collegiate seasons at Providence College. During his time with the Friars in the Big East, Miller recorded 182 saves, 22 clean sheets and a 0.97 goals against average over 53 career appearances.

In Miller’s senior year, he earned preseason Big East Goalkeeper of the Year and All-Big East Second Team honors and recorded nine shutouts in 19 starts.

“Colin had a fantastic collegiate career at Providence,” Loudoun Head Coach Richie Williams said. “He showed great promise at the MLS Combine this past January and we are looking forward to having that talent at Loudoun United.”

LEGION FC ADDS DUO TO INAUGURAL ROSTER: Birmingham Legion FC announced the signings of defender Benjamin Kucera and forward Tyler Savitsky on Wednesday after the duo completed successful trials with the club. Both signings are pending league and federation approval.

Kucera spent the 2018 season locally with the Birmingham Hammers of USL League Two. The center back had previously played in the Czech First Division with FC Slovácko.

Kucera played collegiately at Creighton University and Santa Clara University. He won at both stops, earning a Mountain West Conference Championship, a West Coast Conference Championship and making three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Savitsky also spent the 2018 USL League Two season with the Hammers, but followed that up by playing with Danish Second Division club Næstved Boldklub this past fall.

He split time on both coasts during his collegiate career as well, starting at Harvard University, before playing his final year at Cal Poly. While in school, Savitsky was an All-Big West Honorable Mention in his one season in California.

“Ben and Tyler are both good additions to the team as they will bring versatility and depth to our group,” said Birmingham President and GM Jay Heaps. “With their play last season with the Hammers and their Birmingham ties, adding them to the roster was an easy decision.”

STEEL FC SIGNS INTERNATIONAL PAIR: Bethlehem Steel FC added two new pieces to its 2019 roster this week as the club announced the loans of midfielder Chavany Willis and defender Walter Cortes, pending league and federation approval.

Cortes, a 19-year-old defender from San Jose, Costa Rica, joins from his hometown club Deportivo Saprissa. The club has won Liga FPD a record 34 times, including most recently winning the Costa Rican Apertura championship in 2018.

On the international stage, Cortes featured for Costa Rica’s U-20 National Team during the 2018 Concacaf U-20 Championship, scoring one goal in two starts and recording clean sheets in both of his appearances during the competition. The defender’s efforts helped Panama’s U-20s go undefeated in the group stage, before falling to the United States in the knockout round.

“Walter has impressed so far in preseason, with dogged determination on the defensive side of the ball and good technical ability and passing range on the offensive side of the ball,” said Steel FC Head Coach Brendan Burke. “We are excited for him to challenge the core of first-team left backs in the coming months.”

Willis, a 21-year-old midfielder from Kingston, Jamaica, joins the club from Portmore United of Jamaica’s National Premier League. Willis played two seasons for Portmore, making 46 appearances and scoring six goals as the club claimed the Jamaican National Premier League title in 2018.

“Chavany is a dynamic midfielder, with a really good personality, that can play multiple roles and at 21 he has a ton of upside and room to grow,” said Burke. “He was emerging as a top talent at Portmore United and we are excited to be working with them to bring Chavany to USL Championship.”
