TUCSON, Ariz. Adam Jahn scored with four minutes to go as defending USL Championship Western Conference champion Phoenix Rising FC earned a 1-0 victory against the Portland Timbers on Wednesday night in the Mini Mobile Sun Cup at the Kino Sports Complex.

The goal was set up by fellow new arrival Junior Flemmings, who controlled a long, angled clearance from goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski on the left side. Flemmings scooped a pass over his defender toward Jahn in the left channel, who chested the ball down to his feet, and then made a clever inward shift to beat his man before curling a finish into the right corner of the net.

Woszczynski had previously played a key role in keeping the game scoreless in the first half as he first did enough to deny United States international Jeremy Ebobisse on a one-on-one opportunity in the 18th minute. Eleven minutes later, Woszczynski kept out a low shot by Dairon Asprilla to send the game to the break level.

Jahn had a big chance to open the scoring less than a minute into the second half after a defensive error opened up a chance from eight yards, but the striker’s finish was straight at Timbers goalkeeper Jeff Attinella. Portland then had a goal denied after a Video Review with 10 minutes to go, and six minutes later Jahn made the decisive move to lift Phoenix to victory.

TAMPA BAY ROWDIES 0, MONTREAL IMPACT 0: The Tampa Bay Rowdies’ defense had another solid outing as it played to a scoreless draw with Major League Soccer’s Montreal Impact at Al Lang Stadium in the 2019 Suncoast Invitational.

The Rowdies started the match with Mohamed Kone, Papé Diakité and Tarek Morad in a back three ahead of goalkeeper John McCarthy, who made a number of key saves over the course of the contest to preserve the second clean sheet of the preseason for Tampa Bay.

Montreal produced more offensively, where by contrast the Rowdies weren’t at their best as starters Juan Tejada and Brandon Allen were kept mostly quiet. Tampa Bay’s substitutions in the second half breathed a little life into the attack, but Kwadwo Poku’s shot in second half stoppage rolled just wide of the target in one of the Rowdies only real scoring chances as the game ended even.

LA GALAXY II 1, ORANGE COUNTY SC 0: Ethan Zubak scored the only goal in the 12th minute as Los Dos took victory against their SoCal rivals at the Dignity Health Park Track & Field Stadium.

The goal arrived when the Galaxy II’s Geoffrey Acheampong made an upfield run past defenders before finding fellow midfielder, Jose Hernandez. The former Real Monarchs SLC man produced a weighted pass that set up Zubak for a far-post finish from just outside the penalty area.

NEW YORK RED BULLS 5, PHOENIX RISING FC 2: Jared Stroud, Florian Valot and Tom Barlow were all on target as the Red Bulls defeated Phoenix Rising FC in Tucson, Ariz. in the opening game of Phoenix’s split-squad outing on Wednesday.

Phoenix took the lead as Jason Johnson found the net in the 29th minute, but three minutes later the Red Bulls struck back on a goal by Red Bull Brasil guest player Deivid DeSousa to send the game to the break even.

New York then struck three times in the opening seven minutes of the second half as Stroud put the Red Bulls ahead in the 47th minute with a low finish to the right corner. Valot added another two minutes later as he cleaned up the rebound off a shot from the center of the penalty area, and Barlow made it four in the 52nd minute as he got in behind the Phoenix defense off a through-ball by Vincent Bezecourt and finished.

Rising FC pulled a goal back midway through the second half when Joey Calistri found the net, but with nine minutes to go Sebastian Elney finished a low cross by Ben Mines from close range to wrap up the scoring.
