San Antonio signs pair of former League Two, collegiate standouts

OTTAWA – Ottawa Fury FC announced on Friday it had signed Charlie Ward ahead of the 2019 USL Championship campaign, pending league and federation approval, bringing the central midfielder to Canada’s capital for the new season.

“Charlie is one of the most important pieces to add to the squad as we continue to build towards a successful season,” said Fury FC General Manager Julian de Guzman. “A midfielder with his qualities is not an easy find in this market and I’m thrilled to have Charlie as a new member of Fury FC.”

The 23-year-old spent the 2018 season with fellow Championship side San Antonio FC where he was a key component in the club’s midfield over 12 appearances, recording a passing accuracy rate of 89.6 percent on 58.8 passes per 90 minutes.

Ward has made 55 appearances in the Championship since the start of the 2016 season, including leading Rio Grande Valley FC to the USL Cup Playoffs in his first year in the league when he played every minute of the regular season for the Toros. Ward’s performance that season saw him sign with the Houston Dynamo in the 2017 season, and make his MLS debut on July 22 that year against D.C. United.

SAN ANTONIO SIGNS LEAGUE TWO DUO: San Antonio FC announced on Friday it had signed defender Johnny Fenwick and midfielder Leeroy Maguraushe for the 2019 USL Championship season, pending league and federation approval. The former USL League Two duo will join the professional ranks with SAFC this season.

“Johnny played with [SAFC assistant] Coach [Alen] Marcina during the summer with the Des Moines Menace,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He is coming off of a very successful career at High Point University and is a left-footed defender that can play along the back line both as a center-back and a full-back. He has shown good work ethic and we are looking forward to Johnny joining the squad.”

Fenwick made 12 appearances and recorded one goal and one assist for League Two’s Des Moines Menace last summer as the club claimed the league’s regular-season championship. A former member of both the Newcastle United and Sheffield Wednesday academies, the 24-year-old was named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA All-America Second Team following his senior season where he led High Point to its first appearance in the NCAA tournament.

In his college career, Fenwick was also named the 2018 Big South Defender of the Year and the 2015 Big South Freshman of the Year, while earning four Big South All-Conference selections, three NCCSIA All-State selections and winning the Big South regular season championship twice.

“I am very happy to join SAFC,” said Fenwick. “I am looking forward to meeting up with the lads and getting to work. SAFC is a fantastic club with a lot of ambition. I am hungry to be successful here and I can’t wait to get started.”

Maguraushe competed in League Two for Sounders FC U23 and made 14 appearances during the 2018 regular season to help the side finish second in the Northwest Division. A native of Zimbabwe, Maguraushe joins San Antonio FC his collegiate career at UNC-Greensboro from 2015-18, where he became just the second Spartan to earn All-Southern Conference honors in all four of his playing years. The 23-year-old, who is a former member of Luton Town’s academy in England, recorded 13 goals and 14 assists in 75 matches over the course of his career.

“Leeroy is a talented midfielder out of UNCG,” said Powell. “He is a versatile midfielder who has good athleticism and good temperament. He is going to come in here and compete with the squad from day one.”

“I’m very grateful and excited to be joining this great organization,” said Maguraushe. “I would like to thank San Antonio FC and Darren Powell for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. Playing professionally has always been something I dreamt of, but this is just the beginning. I can’t wait to get to the city and start preparing for the upcoming season.”
