Bryant gets San Antonio return; Tulsa signs local standout; NCFC adds to loan contingent

RENO, Nev. – Reno 1868 FC announced on Thursday that Nevada native and former UNLV standout Danny Musovski had signed a permanent deal with the club after featuring on loan with 1868 FC during the 2018 USL Championship season. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

Musovski, a 2018 MLS SuperDraft pick by the San Jose Earthquakes, was one of Reno’s top scorers in 2018 and his late heroics helped Reno start and extend the longest unbeaten streak in club history. Musovski scored five goals over the season to help 1868 FC return to the USL Cup Playoffs, with two of his tallies serving as game-winners for the side and two others as game-tying goals.

“Danny is a young forward that showed a lot of upside during his rookie season,” said Reno Head Coach Ian Russell. “He’s a great finisher from inside the box and we’re excited to see what he can do this season.”

Prior to his professional career, Musovski featured for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he was a four-year starter and two-time All-America selection for UNLV. During his senior season in 2017, he scored 15 goals and added six assists in 16 appearances, earning Third Team All-America and Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors.

SAFC YOUNGSTER BRYANT RETURNS: San Antonio FC has announced the return to its squad of 17-year-old Ethan Bryant as an Academy signing for the 2019 Championship season with the young standout looking to build on a positive first year with the club’s first team.

“I am very excited to be back in San Antonio this year,” said Bryant. “I’m aiming to make an impact as a player from beginning to end this season. We have a young and talented squad that has a lot of goals this year. I learned a lot in my rookie season and I look forward to getting better and contributing more in 2019.”

Bryant made his professional debut in 2018, becoming the youngest player to appear for the club in its history. The San Antonio native appeared in 10 USL matches for SAFC while compiling 815 total minutes and recording three assists on the season, which were tied for the third most on the roster. On Sept. 29, 2018, Bryant became the youngest goalscorer in San Antonio FC history – 17 years, one month, nine days – as he recorded his first professional goal against the Seattle Sounders FC 2. The midfielder also appeared in one Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match, playing in 120 minutes as SAFC advanced past Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the third round.

“Ethan had a very good first year with us last year,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He is a product of our academy through our Elite Training Program and he developed leaps and bounds last season. We expect the same from him this year as he is now a year older and wiser and knows what to expect at the professional level. We look forward to having Ethan back with the team in 2019.”

LOCAL FORWARD JOINS ROUGHNECKS: Tulsa Roughnecks FC announced on Wednesday evening it had signed forward Dominique “DJ” Dean, adding the local standout to the club’s attack for the new season.

“Signing with the Tulsa Roughnecks means a lot to me and my family,” said Dean. “I am grateful for the opportunity and will do everything I can to help the team. I am excited for the upcoming season and can’t wait to get started.”

Dean played soccer locally at Union High School and for the West Side Alliance Soccer Club. As a senior at Union, Dean was named to the Tulsa World’s All-City First Team as he led the side to the quarterfinals of Oklahoma’s 6A State tournament, scoring 14 goals and recording seven assists over the course of the season.

“DJ is a very promising player with a lot of potential,” said Roughnecks General Manager Wayne Farmer. “It is very important to us that Tulsa players have the opportunity to play at the highest level, and we look forward to seeing more players from Oklahoma follow in DJ’s footsteps by signing as a professional soccer player.”

NORTH CAROLINA ADDS CAMEROONIAN MIDFIELDER: North Carolina FC announced on Thursday it had acquired Cameroonian midfielder Duval Wapiwo on loan from Czech Republic side MFK Vyskov, pending league and federation approval along with receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P1 Visa.

“We’re happy to sign a player like Duval,” said NCFC Head Coach Dave Sarachan. “Although young, Duval has done well in his domestic league and brings that experience to NCFC. Being a box to box midfielder, he has the skill set of being a ball winner as well as a player that can make plays in the attacking third of the field. I look forward to having him join us and to work with him.”

The 18-year-old becomes the third player at NCFC on loan from MFK Vyskov, joining Donovan Ewolo and Yamikani Chester. Prior to joining MFK Vyskov this year, Wapiwo developed his game with Apejes FC de Mfou in Cameroon’s top division. The youngster is a box-to-box midfielder with talent on both sides of the ball.

He joins a growing contingent of African players on NCFC’s roster. Wapiwo and Ewolo (Cameroon) have joined Nigerian Victor Igbekoyi and Malawian Yamikani Chester as African-based players on NCFC’s roster.
