Ivy League standout Castanheira joins ATL UTD 2 for first professional season

EL PASO, Texas – El Paso Locomotive FC announced on Friday it had signed Colombian right back Bryam Rebellon, pending league and federation approval.

Rebellon brings prior USL Championship experience to Locomotive FC, having competed for both the LA Galaxy II and the Swope Park Rangers, registering 50 appearances over two seasons in the league. This past year he made 26 appearances for the Rangers as he helped the side reach the Western Conference Semifinals of the 2018 USL Cup Playoffs.

Prior to his arrival in the United States, the 26-year-old played his youth and early days of his professional career in Argentina and his home country of Colombia. Playing with Independiente Santa Fe in Colombia’s top division and then spending time with Club Atletico Sarmiento in Argentina. In addition to his time with Los Dos and Swope Park, he also previously competed for El Paso Head Coach Mark Lowry in the 2017 season with Jacksonville Armada FC.

“Bryam is another very intelligent footballer and an incredible athlete who possesses great technique,” said Lowry. “He can play various positions, but over the past couple of years has really made the right back spot his home.

“What really sets Bryam apart though, is his character and work ethic. A phenomenal worker who dedicates his life to being the best he can be on the field. I am looking forward to having another high-quality personality in our locker room.”

IVY LEAGUE STANDOUT JOINS ATL UTD 2: Columbia University goalkeeper Dylan Castanheira, who last fall was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, was announced as ATL UTD 2’s newest signing on Friday, pending league and federation approval.

“We have followed Dylan for a while now and are excited to sign him to a professional contract with our club,” said Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra. “He is one of the top goalkeeping prospects in the college game and we are happy to have him join Atlanta United.”

Castanheira assembled a decorated college career at Columbia as he and broke numerous school and conference records. With a career record of 33-10-4, the 6-foot-2 goalkeeper broke the Ivy League record for career goals against average (0.513), set the program record for career shutouts (25) and was an All-Ivy League Team selection three times.

Castanheira ended his career with the Lions as the 2018 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year after making 56 saves over 16 matches to produce a 0.79 goals-against average.

The 23-year-old also led the NCAA in goals against average (0.29) and save percentage (0.903) in his sophomore season and was named second team All-Ivy League. Castanheira led the Lions to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 where he made six saves in a win at William & Mary and saved two shots against No. 1 Wake Forest in the second round.
