2018 Championship Golden Glove-winner helped Cincinnati to regular season championship

INDIANAPOLIS – Indy Eleven announced on Tuesday it had signed 2018 USL Championship Golden Glove-winner Evan Newton for the new season, pending league and federation approval.

Newton enters 2019 as one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the Championship, having made 113 appearances across the regular season and USL Cup Playoffs over the past five years. This past season he posted a 0.80 goals-against average in 20 appearances for FC Cincinnati to claim the league’s Golden Glove award, while also posting nine shutouts for the 2018 regular-season champions.

“I’m really happy that we managed to sign Evan. He’s proved himself to be an exceptional goalkeeper at this level,” said Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie. “Last season, he was the [2018 USL Championship] Golden Glove winner and I think he’s someone that’ll add a lot to our team.”

The 30-year-old Newton has reached the USL Cup Playoffs in each of the past four seasons, reaching the Western Conference Final of the 2015 postseason with OKC Energy FC before two stellar seasons with Sacramento Republic FC.

Originally drafted by the Houston Dynamo in the First Round of the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft before spending the following two seasons with the San Jose Earthquakes, the native of Virginia Beach, Va. has recorded 37 regular-season shutouts over the course of his career.
