Northern California native claimed USL Cup in 2016 with Red Bulls II

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC announced on Friday it had signed northern California native Stefano Bonomo to a USL Championship contract for the 2019 season, pending league and federation approval.

“Stefano is a big addition to our front line,” said Republic FC General Manager Todd Dunivant. “He can score goals in different ways, has shown his leadership qualities as Red Bulls II captain and won the USL Cup in 2016. We are pleased to welcome Stefano back to his native Northern California.”

Bonomo joins Republic FC after spending the bulk of his professional career with USL Championship side New York Red Bulls II. Selected in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft by the New York Red Bulls, Bonomo signed with the Red Bulls II midway through the season.

Bonomo recorded five goals in 26 appearances in his first full season with the Red Bulls II, helping the side claim both the Championship’s regular season title and USL Cup. He then had a breakout year in 2017 with a team-high 13 goals that saw the Red Bulls II return to the Eastern Conference Final of the USL Cup Playoffs.

Bonomo was signed by the New York Red Bulls prior to the 2018 season and made his MLS debut in a 3-0 win at home against Minnesota United FC in March. Bonomo returned on loan to the Red Bulls II during the 2018 season, scoring three goals with the side, before joining the Championship’s Tampa Bay Rowdies in July that year.

A native of Hillsborough, Calif., Bonomo was a collegiate standout at the University of California, Berkeley prior to his professional career. Bonomo was named an All-Pac 12 First Team selection in his senior year and recorded 23 goals and eight assists in 63 appearances during his career for the Golden Bears.
