Championship’s single-season goalscoring record-holder will join NSC on loan in 2019 season

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – 2018 USL Championship Golden Boot-winner Cameron Lancaster was unveiled as the second signing in Nashville MLS’s history on Thursday morning, with the league’s single-season goalscoring record-holder heading to the Music City after signing an MLS contract with the club.

A two-time USL Cup champion with Louisville City FC, Lancaster will play for the USL Championship’s Nashville SC in the 2019 season prior to Nashville MLS’s entry to the top flight for the 2020 season. He joins fellow 2018 USL Championship All-League First Team selection Daniel Rios – who featured for North Carolina FC this past season – on Nashville MLS’s inaugural roster.

“Cameron’s pedigree in English soccer and goal scoring ability here in the U.S. make him an ideal target at this stage of building our club,” said Nashville MLS CEO Ian Ayre. “We are thrilled he will be joining us on our path to Major League Soccer, and we look forward to welcoming him to Nashville.”

Lancaster was a product of the Tottenham Hotspur Academy in London and made his English Premier League debut in 2012 against Wigan Athletic under legendary English manager Harry Redknapp. He also appeared in the squad but was an unused substitute for the Spurs in a Premier League game against Liverpool and a UEFA Europa League group game that same season.

After injuries curtailed his opportunities in England, Lancaster joined Louisville City FC prior to the club’s inaugural season in 2015. Over the past four years he has scored 38 goals in 87 USL Championship appearances for Louisville, including a record 25 regular-season goals in the 2018 campaign at a strike rate of a goal every 80.16 minutes that claimed the league's Golden Boot and earned nomination for the 2018 USL Championship Most Valuable Player award.

The 26-year-old sits 16th on the USL Championship’s all-time goalscoring list and scored the game-winning goal in LouCity’s 2017 USL Cup victory against the Swope Park Rangers.

“Cameron set new standards as a goal scorer in the USL this past season, and compares quite favorably to other strikers that have transitioned from USL to MLS,” said Nashville MLS GM Mike Jacobs. “His instincts around the goal, coupled with his unique ability to finish during the run of play and on set pieces, makes him someone the opposition has to constantly be worried about.”
