Sparrow also heads to Music City to join club’s goalkeeping corps

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nashville SC announced two new signings on Thursday with former Sporting Kansas City forward Kharlton Belmar and former Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Connor Sparrow joining the club for the 2019 USL Championship season.

Belmar has been one of the most prolific forwards in the USL Championship since earning the 2015 Rookie of the Year award with the Portland Timbers 2. For the past two seasons he has featured for the Swope Park Rangers, helping the side win the Western Conference championship in 2017 alongside current Nashville players Liam Doyle and Lebo Moloto, before signing with Sporting Kansas City last offseason.

The 26-year-old is tied for 12th in the league all-time with 40 goals across the regular season and USL Cup Playoffs, and this past season was named the USL Championship Player of the Month for March after a standout start to the year that saw him record eight goals in the club’s first eight games.

“Kharlton’s pace and power has given many defenses sleepless nights,” said Nashville SC Head Coach Gary Smith. “He’s not only a good creator but also a top finisher. He’s a fantastic and exciting addition to the team.”

Sparrow helped Real Monarchs SLC claim the 2017 USL Championship regular season title with seven shutouts in 20 appearances while posting a 0.89 goals-against average and 78.82 save percentage during the campaign. Over the past two seasons, Sparrow has also registered four penalty saves on seven attempts for the Monarchs.

“At 24 years old, Connor has already shown how capable he is,” said Smith. “He was a regular in a very good Monarchs team and has all the qualities needed to develop into a top-flight goalkeeper.”
