English forward scored USL Championship-record 25 regular-season goals in 2018

2018 USL Championship Golden Boot-winner Cameron Lancaster announced on his Instagram account on Tuesday evening his time with two-time USL Cup-winner Louisville City FC was at an end, thanking the club that he had spent the past four seasons with for the opportunity it had provided in his career.

“After 4 seasons with @louisvillecityfc it’s the right time for me to move on,” Lancaster wrote. “The last 4 years have been an unforgettable rollercoaster and they have helped me improve as a player and a person.”

A former Tottenham Hotspur player who turned professional with the Premier League club after graduating from its Academy program, Lancaster arrived in Louisville prior to the club’s inaugural USL Championship season in 2015. A torn ACL curtailed his first season with the club, but he rebounded to make 26 appearances in the 2016 season as he recorded four goals and one assist.

The following year would also see Lancaster struggle at times with injury as he recorded only 10 starts in his 24 appearances for the side while notching eight goals, but he produced one of the biggest moments of the 2017 season with a late game-winner in the USL Cup as LouCity defeated the Swope Park Rangers 1-0 for its first championship.

The 2018 campaign served as Lancaster’s full coming-out party as he recorded 25 goals in the regular season – surpassing the 22-goal season recorded by former Louisville teammate Matt Fondy in the 2015 season – and another in the USL Cup Playoffs as Louisville became the first side to claim the USL Cup in back-to-back seasons. Lancaster was named as a finalist for the USL Championship’s Most Valuable Player award and was voted to the USL Championship All-League First Team for his outstanding performance.

The 26-year-old leaves as the leading scorer in Louisville’s history with 38 goals in 87 USL Championship appearances over the past four seasons, which places Lancaster 16th all-time in the league’s modern era. Lancaster’s scoring rate of a goal every 115.05 minutes is the best of any player to have recorded at least 25 goals since the start of the 2011 USL Championship season.
