SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC announced on Wednesday it had signed defender Kai Greene for the 2019 USL Championship season pending league and federation approval. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The 25-year-old has spent the past three seasons with fellow USL Championship Western Conference side Rio Grande Valley FC, appearing in 68 USL Championship matches in that span. Greene appeared in 18 matches for the Toros in the 2018 season as he recorded 48 clearances, 41 interceptions, 54 tackles, and a 70 percent duel-success rate for the club. In the attack, the defender contributed with eight chances created and a 75 percent passing accuracy.

“We’re excited for Kai to join our squad,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “He’s a player we identified during the offseason to come in and help our back line. He’s versatile between the center back and right back positions and has three years of USL experience. We’re looking forward to working with him in 2019.”

Greene helped lead the Toros to the 2016 USL Cup Playoffs in the club’s inaugural season, and over the past two seasons has been one of the more consistent defenders in the league. His 67.5 duel success rate ranks second in the USL Championship over the past two seasons among players with at least 400 contested duels, and he has won 78 of 122 aerial duels over that span (63.9 percent).

“I’m very excited to join this professional club,” Greene said. “It’s important that the fans get a championship-caliber team this season and we will work hard to give them that. We have a lot to prove and we’ll do so by working collectively.”
