PHOENIX – Phoenix Rising FC announced on Wednesday it had signed Jamaican international Junior Flemmings for the 2019 USL Championship season, and that midfielder Alessandro Riggi would return to the club for the new campaign. The signings are pending league and federation approval, and per club policy the details of the contract will not be made public.
Flemmings has recorded 23 goals and 12 assists over the past three seasons in the USL Championship, and in 2018 logged six goals and a team-high five assists for the Tampa Bay Rowdies. The 22-year-old had previously spent two successful seasons with the New York Red Bulls II, with whom he claimed the USL Cup in 2016 while being named as the No. 6 selection to the 2016 USL 20 Under 20.
“I am really excited and humbled to have such an ambitious organization like Phoenix Rising to play for. I can’t wait to meet the entire Rising family and wish the season started tomorrow.”
Riggi will return for his third season with the club after a 2018 campaign that saw him limited to 342 minutes in 14 appearances due to a lower-body injury that cost him the latter half of the 2018 campaign. Despite his limited time on the field, Riggi tallied five assists, good for second on the team, and two goals. In Week 9, Riggi was named to the USL Team of the Week.
“I am happy to be back with the best club in the USL,” said Riggi. “Together as a club, we will bring the cup home in 2019.”
Riggi has recorded 21 goals and 13 assists in the USL Championship since joining FC Montreal prior to the 2015 season. The 25-year-old had previously gone overseas to Europe to begin his professional where he spent time with Italian side Sampdoria, Spanish side Celta Vigo, and Portuguese side Atletico S.C. before returning to North America.
