Experienced defender had standout 2018 campaign with San Antonio FC

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nashville SC announced on Tuesday it had signed 2018 USL Championship All-League selection Darnell King, pending league and federation approval, as the club continues to add to its squad for the 2019 campaign. King led San Antonio FC last season in starts, minutes, clearances and tackles, while contributing offensively with three goals and five assists.

King was named to the USL Championship All-League Second Team in 2018 after a standout season with SAFC. He was one of just six defenders recognized on an All-League team last year and the only primary right back to receive the honor.

“Darnell is in the prime of his career and brings an abundance of pace and energy, whilst offering a very attack-minded approach to the game,” said Nashville SC Head Coach Gary Smith. “He is a wonderful addition to the team after a great season in the Western Conference.”

The 28-year-old native of Florida brings extensive experience to Nashville, having made almost 200 professional appearances since the start of his professional career with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 2012. Following three seasons with the Strikers, he joined his hometown club the Tampa Bay Rowdies for three seasons before joining San Antonio last offseason.

Over the past two seasons, King has recorded 141 interceptions to place in the top five in the league over that span and has also logged more than 5,100 minutes of action, placing him in the Top 30 in the league in that category.

“Darnell is a dynamic right-sided defender who has the potential to impact a match on both sides of the ball,” said Nashville SC VP of Soccer Operations and Technical Director Mike Jacobs. “He embodies what we look for in players in those roles on the field.”
