LAS VEGAS – Las Vegas Lights FC announced its first roster moves of the offseason on Friday with forward Sammy Ochoa among five players confirmed to return to the side for the 2019 USL Championship campaign.
Ochoa led all Lights FC players in 2018 with 2,765 minutes played over 32 games and was the team's second-leading scorer with eight goals. His bicycle kick finish in the team's home finale against Phoenix Rising FC is up for the 2018 USL Fans’ Choice Goal of the Year.
In addition to re-signing Ochoa, the club exercised contract options on goalkeepers Thomas Olsen and Angel Alvarez, defender Christian Torres and midfielder Matt Thomas, who scored the first-ever goal in Lights FC history.
Las Vegas elected to decline options on goalkeeper Ricardo Ferriño, defenders Joel Huiqui, Rodrigo Iñigo and Juan Herrera-Perla, midfielder Daigo Kobayashi, and forwards Juan Carlos Garcia and Daniel Guzman Jr.
The club also declined options on defender Miguel Garduño and midfielders Carlos Alvarez and Alex Mendoza, but still remain in active negotiations with them to join the 2019 roster.
Midfielders Freddy Adu, Eric Avila, Raul Mendiola and Rafael Garcia also saw their contracts expire at the end of the 2018 season, making them free agents, but the club is still actively negotiating with Adu and Avila regarding a possible return to Lights FC in 2019.
