Rising re-sign Lubin, Vega; Bold bolster midfield with de Villardi

SAN ANTONIO – On Thursday, San Antonio FC announced the re-signing of forward Ever Guzman for the 2019 USL season, pending league and federation clearance. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Guzman will enter his third season with the club as its all-time leading scorer (15 goals) after originally joining SAFC in August 2017. He appeared in 27 regular season matches in 2018, setting a new single-season scoring record for the Alamo City club with 11 goals while adding three assists.

“We’re very pleased to have Ever back for the 2019 season,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “He is very consistent in his level of performances and while his goals are there for everyone to see, his daily effort and commitment for the betterment of the team make him one of the best strikers in the league.”

Guzman originally joined SAFC from Liga MX in Mexico late in the 2017 USL season, scoring four goals in nine appearances in regular season play and adding a stoppage-time goal from the penalty spot in the club’s first-ever USL Cup Playoffs win.

“I’m very happy and grateful for this opportunity” Guzman said. “I’m happy to be back with our amazing fans and play alongside familiar faces. I’m excited to get back to work towards our goal of reaching the playoffs and competing for titles.”

RISING FC BRINGS BACK LUBIN, VEGA: Phoenix Rising FC also added to its expanding list of returnees as the club announced goalkeeper Zac Lubin and midfielder Devin Vega have re-signed for the 2019 USL Championship season. Per club policy, the details of the contracts will not be made public.

Lubin and Vega join Solomon Asante, Amadou Dia, Joey Farrell, Collin Fernandez and James Musa as the latest members from the 2018 Western Conference champion to commit their future to the club. Lubin made nine appearances in his first season with Rising FC, playing 787 minutes and notching three clean sheets as the backup goalkeeper to Carl Woszczynski.

“Since day one I loved my time in Phoenix,” said Lubin. “From the ownership group, to the coaches, front office, day-to-day staff, and most importantly the fans. I’m very honored to have the opportunity to represent them again in 2019 and can’t wait to get started on winning more trophies.”

Vega also joined Rising FC last off-season after starting his professional career with San Antonio FC. The 19-year-old played 690 minutes in 12 appearances in his first campaign with Phoenix, scoring twice –including a goal against his former team – and recording one assist.

“I am beyond blessed with the opportunity to play for Phoenix Rising in 2019,” said Vega. “I can’t wait to get back to work with my teammates and coaches. Our goal is to bring back the cup we deserved last season to the fans in 2019.”

BOLD MAKE DE VILLARDI 12TH SIGNING: After adding goalkeeper Ryan Thompson earlier this week, Bold FC continued to bolster its inaugural roster as the club announced the signing of French defensive midfielder Thomas de Villardi for the 2019 season, pending league and federation approval.

de Villardi arrives from Minnesota United FC, who selected him with the No. 42 overall pick in the 2017 Major League Soccer SuperDraft.

“Thomas is a solid defender with great technical ability. His youth experience in France, college career in the United States and his selection by an MLS team make him an excellent prospect for our first-year club,” said Bold FC Head Coach Marcelo Serrano. “He has an excellent reputation not only for his soccer abilities but also as a great person and leader on and off the field.”

The 24-year-old played collegiately at Duquesne University and the University of Delaware, spending two years with each program. de Villardi was a two-time All-Colonial Athletic Conference selection following his junior and senior seasons at Delaware. He was named the CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Performer in 2016 and selected to the CAA All-Tournament team in 2015 and 2016. Following his freshman season at Duquesne, the midfielder was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team.

“The Bold have given me an incredible opportunity to play in Austin,” said de Villardi. “I feel honored to be a part of an ambitious project in the USL Championship and can’t wait to start practicing with the group for the upcoming season.”
