Irish midfielder became first in LouCity history to top 100 appearances for club in 2018

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Two-time USL Cup champion Louisville City FC announced on Tuesday it had re-signed the club’s all-time appearance leader Niall McCabe, with the Irish midfielder set to remain with the club as it enters its fifth season in the 2019 USL Championship campaign. McCabe will become one of just two players to have been with LouCity since its inception with the new deal, which is pending league and federation approval.

The Irishman returns after becoming LouCity’s lone centurion in USL play, reaching the 100-appearance mark in a 2-1 win against North Carolina FC on October 9. A fixture in the LouCity side for the last four seasons, McCabe has totaled 105 appearances and 79 starts and has scored 15 goals with 16 assists in that span.

“Niall was a big part of the team’s success last year and, like a lot of the group, is a leader in the locker room that we can’t value enough,” said LouCity Head Coach John Hackworth. “He puts in more than what is required every day and you can see what being able to contribute on the field means to him. His passion to compete is outstanding, both in training and games. We’re obviously very excited to have Niall back in the fold for next year.”

A two-time USL Cup champion with Louisville, McCabe had a career season for the club in 2018. The 28-year-old native of Dublin made 33 appearances, including 26 games starts as he set new single-season bests with six goals and six assists. McCabe scored twice in LouCity’s 4-1 victory against Indy Eleven in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals of the 2018 USL Cup Playoffs, his first two postseason goals for the club.

“First and foremost, I’m delighted to be back,” said McCabe. “I don’t think there is a better place to be in the USL than the back-to-back champions. The group wants to create a dynasty and we’re totally focused and driven to do that. Exciting times are ahead with the stadium and I’m looking forward to being a small part in that. To the fans, I look forward to seeing you guys packings the stands and willing us to another championship.”

McCabe will again wear the No.11 shirt for City and becomes the 15th member to remain with LouCity following the 2018 season.
