Austin introduces former Hounds, STLFC goalkeeper Thompson

PHOENIX – Phoenix Rising FC announced on Monday the return of former USL Championship All-League defender Joey Farrell for the 2019 season. Per club policy, the details of the contract were not made public.

“I am buzzing at the opportunity to be back with Rising FC next season,” Farrell said. “We set the bar high this year, but there is only one direction that this club goes and that is up! Can’t wait to see the fans in 2019.”

Farrell made 26 appearances and logged 2,225 minutes in his first season with Rising FC and finished second on the club in clearances (112) and aerial duels won (92). Farrell was a part of a record-breaking defensive unit that broke a single-season club record for most shutouts in a season (15), and recorded four goals, tying a single-season career high.

The 24-year-old spent his first two seasons with the Rochester Rhinos, where he was named to the USL Championship All-League Second Team and was a finalist for the USL Championship Rookie of the Year award in the 2016 campaign.

BOLD FC BRINGS THOMPSON ABOARD: Austin Bold FC announced on Monday that it had signed former Jamaican National Team goalkeeper Ryan Thompson for its inaugural season. Thompson will also serve as Austin’s goalkeeping coach, having performed that duty for both the University of South Florida over the past two seasons and his alma mater, the University of Tampa.

“Ryan comes to Austin with playing experience across many levels, including in the United States, the Jamaica national team and in Europe,” said Bold FC Head Coach Marcelo Serrano. “Over the past year he has been transitioning from player to coach and we are able to provide him with the unique opportunity in which he can still play but also prepare for his coaching career.”

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Thompson earned 12 caps with the Jamaica national team, collecting six wins in eight starts. Thompson helped guide Jamaica to a runner-up result in the 2015 Concacaf Gold Cup, entering in the final match of the group stage to preserve a 1-0 victory over El Salvador to win Group B. He then posted a clean sheet in a 1-0 triumph against Haiti in the quarterfinals and a 2-1 victory against the United States in the semifinal before falling to Mexico in the final.

A former member of both Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and Saint Louis FC in the USL Championship, Thompson also made 20 appearances with the Jamaica U-20 National Team and a pair of appearances with the U-23 side.

“I am truly grateful for this opportunity and thrilled to start the season,” said Thompson. “I can’t wait to see what this season will bring.”
