2018 20 Under 20 selection scores 79th-minute winner in 2-1 win at Concacaf U-20 Championship

BRADENTON, Fla. – Ottawa Fury FC standout Adonijah Reid scored the game-winner 11 minutes from the end as the Canada U-20 National Team continued its perfect start to the 2018 Concacaf U-20 Championship with a 2-1 win against Guadaloupe on Sunday afternoon at IMG Academy in Bradenton.

Reid – who in October was named the No. 8 selection in the 2018 USL 20 Under 20 – bagged his first goal of the tournament just in time to set Canada on course for what looms as its biggest game of the group stage against Panama on Tuesday night.

Canada made changes to its starting lineup from its opening game of the tournament as Toronto FC II defenders Rocco Romeo and Terique Mohamed and forward Jordan Perruzza all moved into the side. Former FC Montreal midfield Mathieu Choiniere also made his first start of the tournament and gave Canada the lead in the seventh minutes with a low shot that picked out the bottom-left corner.

Guadaloupe equalized inside the opening minute of the second half when Luther Archimede got in behind the defense and slid his finish home, but that spurred a response by Canada as it brought on first Vanouver Whitecaps FC Academy forward Theo Bair in the 66th minute and then Reid with 15 minutes to go to push for a winner.

That goal arrived four minutes after Reid’s introduction as Bair got into space on the right side of the penalty area and slid a low cross toward the top-left corner of the six-yard area where Reid arrived to fired home a sliding, first-time finish that lifted Canada to victory.
