Remarkable Olimpico from corner kick by Fury FC midfielder takes September’s award

TAMPA, Fla. – Ottawa Fury FC midfielder Cristian Portilla has earned the USL Fans’ Choice Goal of the Month for September as his remarkable Olimpico against Toronto FC II that helped Fury FC to victory in its pursuit of a place in the 2018 USL Cup Playoffs took top spot in the online poll conducted over the past weekend.

Portilla executed his portion of the set piece from the right to perfection as a cluster of Fury FC players settled in to serve as a decoy at the near post in advance of the delivery. Portilla’s left-footed ball sailed over his teammates, and Toronto FC II goalkeeper Borja Angoitia and picked out the far left corner of the net for one of the more memorable goals of Ottawa’s season.

Portilla’s goal earned 36 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Monday. San Antonio FC’s Ethan Bryant finished second with 23 percent for his outstanding first-time volley in SAFC’s victory against Seattle Sounders FC 2, while FC Cincinnati’s Fanendo Adi took third with 18 percent for his outstanding individual effort against Toronto FC II at Nippert Stadium.
