Former Red Bulls II standout’s first international goal nabs victory at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Less than two years ago, Tyler Adams was raising the USL Cup after playing a key role in the New York Red Bulls II’s victory against the Swope Park Rangers at Red Bull Arena in the 2016 edition of the championship game.

On Tuesday night, Adams scored his first international goal for the United States, which lifted the side to a 1-0 victory against regional rival Mexico in an international exhibition before a crowd of 40,194 fans at Nissan Stadium.

Making his seventh appearance for the side since his debut last November, Adams scored in the 71st minute as he broke forward from midfield to latch onto a low cross from the left by Antonee Robinson. The 19-year-old’s first-time finish from 14 yards picked out the bottom-left corner of the net to send the youngster, his teammates and much of the crowd on hand into celebration.

Former Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC loanee Zack Steffen recorded three saves to preserve the shutout against El Tri, which had been reduced to 10 men in the 67th minute when Angel Zaldivar was sent off for a strong challenge on Wil Trapp.

The night also saw appearances for the United States from Gyasi Zardes, Cristian Roldan and Marco Delgado, all of whom appeared in their careers on loan in the USL.

Adams is the second former USL Cup-winner to score for the U.S. Men's National Team following Dom Dwyer, who won the championship in the 2013 season with Orlando City SC. Dwyer has scored two goals in four career appearances for the United States.
