Bethlehem shot-stopper takes top spot in online poll after standout save against Richmond

TAMPA, Fla. – Bethlehem Steel FC goalkeeper Jake McGuire has earned the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 21 of the 2018 season, taking the honor for a remarkable point-blank save this past Saturday against the Richmond Kickers that finished top of the weekly online poll.

McGuire has had a strong season for Steel FC, helping the club sit in the Eastern Conference playoff positions after picking up his second consecutive shutout on Wednesday night against the Charlotte Independence. In Richmond last Saturday, the 23-year-old’s reflexes came to the fore as a deflected effort from a set piece was powered toward goal by a close-range header from Kickers forward Brian Shriver only for McGuire to parry the effort and allow the ball to be cleared,

McGuire’s save earned 43 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Friday. San Antonio FC’s Diego Restrepo finished second on 32 percent for his outstanding full-stretch save that pushed a long-range effort by the LA Galaxy II’s Frank Lopez onto the crossbar and to safety, while Las Vegas Lights FC’s Ricardo Ferriño took third with 15 percent for an outstanding close-range stop on Rio Grande Valley FC’s Wilmer Cabrera Jr. that stood as the high-point of a seven-save shutout last Saturday night.
