ST. PETERBURG, Fla. – The USL Game of the Week visits what Fox Sports’ Rob Stone believes is “the most underrated and misunderstood” soccer stadium in the United States on Wednesday night (7:30 p.m. ET | Match Center | ESPNews) as the Tampa Bay Rowdies play host to the Charleston Battery at Al Lang Stadium for a crucial game for both clubs as we begin the final stretch of the 2018 USL regular season.

Here are five things to watch for as the Southeastern rivals square off on by the waterfront in downtown St. Petersburg.

1. FULLY CHARGED: The Battery enter Wednesday night’s contest on a nine-game undefeated streak, which stands as the fourth-longest in the league this season and second-longest active streak behind FC Cincinnati’s current 11-game run. Charleston will reach two months without a league defeat should it either take victory or earn a draw on Wednesday night, and the visitors have been hard to break down with three consecutive shutouts and only four goals conceded total over the course of the past nine games.

2. MUST-WIN TIME: The Rowdies have undergone a midseason overhaul to try and boost their playoff hopes, but after a 2-0 defeat last time out to Ottawa Fury FC on Friday night there’s still a lot of work to be done if Tampa Bay is to reach the 2018 USL Cup Playoffs. The good news for the Rowdies is seven of their final 13 games are at Al Lang Stadium, including two this week with North Carolina FC coming to town. Taking all three points in both contests would be a massive step forward for Head Coach Neill Collins’ side, which has been working to restore its home field advantage after going 2-2-4 on home turf since the start of May.

3. HISTORY MAN: Joe Kuzminsky has been the regular starter for the Battery for much of the season, but there could be a chance we’ll see Odisnel Cooper in net for Charleston on Wednesday as the visitors go through a stretch of three games in eight days over the week, as happened when Cooper started in the last Wednesday night contest the Battery faced against Indy Eleven on July 11. If so, we could be in for a piece of USL history with the Cuban goalkeeper sitting on 39 regular-season shutouts for his career with the club. No-one in the USL’s modern era has reached 40 shutouts, giving Cooper a chance at a landmark achievement if he gets the nod against the Rowdies.

4. THE POKU EFFECT: One of the midseason additions to the Rowdies lineup was Kwadwo Poku, who burst onto the North American scene three seasons ago with New York City FC as he recorded four goals and seven assists in the club’s first season in Major League Soccer. The Ghanaian hasn’t had that impact yet for the Rowdies, with five key passes but no goals or assists in four appearances for the side so far, but if Tampa Bay is going to find another gear Poku could be the man to provide it. His battle with Battery midfield terrier Tah Anunga will be one to keep an eye on throughout the night.

5. GOLDEN EYE: With 10 players already having hit double-digit goals this season, the race for the USL Golden Boot has got plenty of contenders in what’s shaping up to be one of the broadest races for the league award in the USL’s modern history. Among those contenders is Ataullar Guerra, who enters Wednesday night tied for the league-lead with 12 goals this season after scoring five times in July, a feat that earned him nomination for Player of the Month. The Trinidad & Tobago international can strike in numerous ways, with two of his tallies this season coming from outside the penalty area in addition to two headed goals and two left-footed finishes. Guerra provided the game-winner when these teams met for the first time this season on April 28 at MUSC Health Stadium, and he’ll be hoping to start a new scoring streak after his recent three-game run was halted this past Saturday in North Carolina.
