THREE THINGS THAT MATTERED

1. The Charleston Battery bagged an important victory as O’Brian Woodbine had a goal and assist in a 4-0 win against Toronto FC II to break a six-game winless streak for the visitors at BMO Field. After scoring only one goal in their past three games the Battery attack pushed the side into sixth place in the Eastern Conference and just three points back of the second-place Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.

2. The Battery’s victory arrived at a key moment of the season for the perennial playoff contender, which visits regional rival North Carolina FC next week before games against Indy Eleven (July 11), Louisville City FC (July 14) and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (July 21), all of which currently sit in the top five in the Eastern Conference.

3. The LA Galaxy II’s Efrain Alvarez continued to show off his remarkable ability in another high-scoring affair for Los Dos, a 5-3 victory against Seattle Sounders FC 2 that saw the Mexico U17 international strike twice in the second half. Alvarez and Charleston’s Ataulla Guerra both reached eight goals for the season on Sunday, adding to an already-congested race for the USL Golden Boot.

GAME REPORTS

LA GALAXY II (5), SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC 2 (3)

The LA Galaxy II broke a three-game losing streak as Efrain Alvarez scored twice in a 5-3 victory against Seattle Sounders FC 2 at StubHub Center Track and Field Stadium. S2 opened the scoring through Ray Saari in the 14th minute, but two goals in just over two minutes by Geoffrey Acheampong and Frankie Lopez put Los Dos on top before Seattle’s Jesse Daley equalized just before halftime. Alvarez struck twice in the second half, however, bookending a goal by LA’s Alex Mendez to put the Galaxy II in firm control just past the hour-mark, and while S2’s David Estrada scored with 10 minutes to go that was a close as the visitors came to a comeback.

TORONTO FC II (0), CHARLESTON BATTERY (4)

The Charleston Battery scored all of their goals in the second half in a 4-0 victory against Toronto FC II at BMO Field. Neither side recorded a shot on goal in the first half, but a defensive error opened up a chance that Charleston’s Ataulla Guerra seized upon to open the scoring in the 59th minute, and six minutes later Kotaro Higashi put home a second. Goals by O’Brian Woodbine and Gordon Wild inside the final 10 minutes then wrapped up victory for the visitors.
