Reno picks up big road win; Late drama for NCFC, Switchbacks, Energy FC, Saint Louis

THREE THINGS THAT MATTERED

1. Reno 1868 FC continued its stunning run of form that has pushed it up to seventh place in the USL Western Conference. 1868 FC handed San Antonio FC its second home loss of the season, extending its undefeated streak to 12.

2. With six different goal scorers Orange County SC managed a complete team effort in its win over Tulsa Rounghnecks FC but one goal scorer stood out. Thomas Enevoldsen's goal gave him the outright lead in the Golden Boot race, with his ninth goal of the season.


3. Yet again Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC were hard to break down in defense, continuing its mark of facing the fewest shots in the league. The Hounds only faced three shots in this match, bringing its season total to 106.

SACRAMENTO REPUBLIC FC (2) VS. SAINT LOUIS FC (2)

A brace to Cameron Iwasa was not enough as Saint Louis FC came from behind, with Wal Fall’s free kick in the 90th minute sealing Saint Louis a 2-2 draw with Sacramento Republic FC in front of 10,570 fans at Papa Murphy’s Park.

— While his two goals ended up not being enough, Iwasa was the star for Sacramento, scoring twice and winning eight duels.

ORANGE COUNTY SC (6) VS. TULSA ROUGHNECKS FC (1)

The Orange County SC offense came alive as it managed a 6-1 win against Tulsa Roughnecks FC at Champions Soccer Stadium at OC Great Park. Goals to Jos Hooiveld, Thomas Enevoldsen, Alex Crognale, Aodhan Quinn, Amirgy Pineda, and Mats Bjurman pushed the hosts to the big victory.

— The penalty was a just reward for the big contribution made by Quinn who also provided two assists and won six duels.

COLORADO SPRINGS SWITCHBACKS FC (1) VS. FRESNO FC (0)

A perfectly struck free kick from Shane Malcolm in the 85th minute continued Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC’s run of form with a 1-0 win against Fresno FC at a sold-out Weidner Field, sending the 5,000 fans home happy.

— The late goal capped an impressive performance from Malcolm, who managed an 87.5 percent passing accuracy, and included getting back to make two tackles.

SAN ANTONIO FC (0) VS. RENO 1868 FC (2)

Reno 1868 FC extended its undefeated streak with a strong 2-0 victory over San Antonio FC at Toyota Field, leaving 6,527 fans disappointed. A stunning freekick goal to Jerry van Ewijk got things going before Brian Brown sealed the match in the second half.

 – Hoppenot provided the assist on the second goal of the match that would seal things for the visitors. Hoppenot created five chances as part of his strong attacking performance.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY FC (0) VS. PHOENIX RISING FC (0)

Rio Grande Valley FC used a strong rear-guard effort to hold Phoenix Rising FC at bay and hold out for a 0-0 draw in front of 5,649 fans at H-E-B Park.

– Against a strong Phoenix attack, Nelson held firm in the Toros’ net, managing a six-save shutout to earn his team a point.

OKC ENERGY FC (1) VS. LA GALAXY II (0)

A 90th minute Christian Volesky goal saw OKC Energy FC steal three points from LA Galaxy II, managing a 1-0 win against LA Galaxy II at Taft Stadium. Volesky headed home a corner from Philip Rasmussen to claim the win.

Philip Rasmussen, OKC Energy FC – Rasmussen sent in the cross for Volesky’s header that would win the game, and that cross reflected his distribution through the evening, with a 90 percent passing accuracy and four successful crosses.

RICHMOND KICKERS (1) vs. charlotte independence  (1)

After Brian Shriver opened the scoring for the Richmond Kickers in just the sixth minute the Charlotte Independence came back scoring through Cordell Cato in the 20th minute but couldn't find a winner in a 1-1 draw at City Stadium, in front of 5,364 fans.

 Cato scored the goal that would seal a point for the Independence and was active all game, with a 93.6 percent passing accuracy he helped pull the strings for the visitors.

NORTH CAROLINA FC (2) VS. LOUISVILLE CITY FC (2)

A Daniel Rios brace, the second goal coming in the 87th minute, gave North Carolina FC a 2-2 draw with Louisville City FC at Sahlen's Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Rios continued his impressive season scoring a brace to steal a point for NCFC, his two goals coming from his only shots on target, while he also got work done at the other end of the pitch, blocking two shots.

CHARLESTON bATTERY (0) VS. PITTSBURGH RIVERHOUNDS SC (0)

The Charleston Battery and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC played out a tense and hard-fought scoreless draw at MUSC Health Stadium, continuing the strong defensive form of the visitors.
