A club-record nine-game unbeaten run has produced some impressive numbers for 1868 FC

RENO, Nev. — Reno 1868 FC is not only in the middle of its best run of the season but its best run in club history as its undefeated run has now stretched to nine games. That run has produced some notable numbers, and has seen the team rise in a number of statistical categories alongside its rise up the league.

Here are nine numbers that have been central to 1868 FC's nine-game run.

1. — 7,975: With the fifth-highest number of touches in the league, Reno 1868 FC has gradually been picking up that number as the run has continued. With increased touches in each contest, Reno's players have been able to move through opposition defenses and hold greater control of games. That number has increased at a rapid rate over the club's undefeated run as the Reno players have used sharper passing and strong runs to generate results.

2. — 869: Reno is second in the USL behind Sacramento Republic FC in possession recoveries with 869 on the season so far. That figures has been produced largely in the last nine matches, and it’s been the difference between winning and losing. An often overlooked statistic, but one that winning teams get right, a recovery is when a player wins back a loose ball to regain possession, and can be the difference between keeping possession or giving up a counterattack. Before the run of form Reno was not winning possession as consistently, but now it’s clearly doing the right things to win that loose ball and keeping the pressure up.

3. — 314: As part of the significant number of touches made by Reno, 314 of those have come in the opponent’s penalty area, the third-highest total in the league. With so many touches in the box, Reno has shown it can get forward and get into good positions in the final third and isn’t afraid to make the extra pass into the box to get the a clear look on goal.

4. — 202: Second only to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC in interceptions, and only barely with 10 fewer, Reno has been breaking up its opponent's passes, which has interrupted the flow of attacks coming in on goal. In Reno's opening four matches of the season the team made 50 interceptions, an average of 12.5 per game. In raising that number to 152 over its nine-game run, 1868 FC has produced a significant uptick in that average to 16.9 per game as it has read opposing passing lanes more effectively. That difference has played a part in Reno only conceding seven goals in its past nine games.

5. — 177: Reno 1868 FC has stepped up its shooting efforts, bringing its total for the season to 177 total shots, good for third in the league. Prior to the nine-game unbeaten run, 1868 FC recorded 48 shots over four contests, an solid average of 12 per game. Since then it has recorded 129 shots the nine games, increasing the average to 14.3 per game, a subtle but significant difference that has seen the Reno look more dangerous in the attacking third.

6. — 167: Teams will always have their own styles, some look to pass the ball around trying to work space in a defensive line, but that’s not the angle Reno has taken. Reno has managed to complete 167 dribbles successfully,, the fourth-highest total in the league this season. With the club's wide players using the opportunity to run at opposing defenses, taking the space that is afforded to it and cutting to the heart of an opponent via one-on-one matchups, Reno has trusted its talent to produce rather than wait to build up play. With the club's high interception rate allowing it to get into attack at speed with regularity, it's allowed 1868 FC to put opponents on the back foot and allow the talents of players like Lindo Mfeka, Antoine Hoppenot and Paul Marie the chance to shine.

7. — 133: Reno is fifth in the league in chances created with 133, which follows logically from having such a high shot count. Those shots aren’t coming from nowhere, and two familiar faces lead the way here, with midfielders Mfeka (18) and Hoppenot (17) getting into the form they showed in 2017 that led Reno to a third-place finish in the Western Conference.

8. — 111: A lot of teams can lean on set pieces to create scoring opportunity, but 111 of Reno's 133 created chances overall have come via open play. That puts the side in some elite company, just one behind defending USL Cup champions Louisville City FC, and three behind the league-leading Real Monarchs SLC. This has allowed Reno to strike from different areas, with an unpredictable offense that has proved hard to stop.

9. — 3: It may not sound like much but it’s a notable number, Reno 1868 FC has managed three shots from counterattacks, which is good enough for a tie for second in the league in that category. Speed kills in any league but Reno has been able to use speed to break through on the counterattack and create opportunities. If it can start converting those shots into goals, which has not happened yet, the club's run could stretch well into the double-digits.
