Foxes’ Verhoeven Named in Canada Squad for Toulon Tournament

Toronto’s Daniels, Okello also called up to play in 46th edition of prestigious event

OTTAWA – Fresno FC’s Noah Verhoeven is one of nine players with USL experience to have been named in Canada’s squad for the prestigious Toulon Tournament in France later this month, which celebrates its 46th edition by bringing together 12 of the world’s top countries for the two-week event starting on May 26.

A former member of Vancouver Whitecaps FC Academy, Verhoeven signed with the Foxes prior to the club’s inaugural season this spring through the partnership between the two clubs. The 18-year-old has made 10 appearances for the Foxes this season, including seven starts, while recording nine key passes and one assist from the flank for the expansion side.

Verhoeven is joined in the squad by Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s David Norman Jr., who signed as a Homegrown player with the ‘Caps after starring in 2017 for Whitecaps FC 2, earning the club’s Player of the Year award, and Theo Bair, who was an Academy signing for WFC2 a season ago.

Toronto FC II standouts Aidan Daniels and Noble Okello were also named in the squad, with both players in the top five in minutes played this season for TFC II. Daniels has scored a pair of goals this season for the Young Reds, including in last night’s contest with ATL UTD 2, while Okello has made 14 interceptions and won seven of nine tackles so far this season. Julian Dunn completes the TFC II trio named in the squad, with the 17-year-old having made four appearances in which he has won 28 of 40 duels overall.

Also named in the squad is midfielder Shamit Shome, who is currently on loan with Ottawa Fury FC from the Montreal Impact, and Impact goalkeeper James Pantemis and midfielder David Choiniere, both of whom appeared for FC Montreal in the 2016 season before signing as Homegrown Players with the club.

Canada will open the tournament on May 28 as it takes on Portugal, with matchups against Turkey on May 31 and Japan on June 3 concluding the group stage. The winners of each of the three groups and one wild card advance to the semifinals, with the final set to be held on June 9.
