Outstanding double-save against Indy takes top spot in online poll

TAMPA, Fla. – FC Cincinnati goalkeeper Evan Newton’s outstanding double-save against Indy Eleven in Week 3 of the 2018 USL regular season has been voted the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Month for March, taking 58 percent of the online poll conducted this weekend.

Newton had an outstanding opening month of the season, recording back-to-back shutouts that saw him make 10 saves in two road victories. The veteran goalkeeper’s six-save shutout against Indy Eleven was highlighted by back-to-back saves that first kept out a penalty kick by Jack McInerney and then the rebound chance for Ben Speas late in the first half at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Newton’s saves finished 1-2 in voting in the online poll conducted at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Monday morning, with his excellent reflex stop against the Charleston Battery in Week 1 garnering 18 percent of the vote. The Tampa Bay Rowdies’ Cody Mizell and Las Vegas Lights FC’s Ricardo Ferriño finished tied for third on 12 percent for their respective saves that helped earn victories against Bethlehem Steel FC and Fresno FC.
