USL venues to welcome group stages for World Cup Qualifying tournament in October

CHICAGO – Concacaf announced on Sunday that North Carolina FC’s Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park and Rio Grande Valley FC’s H-E-B Park would be host venues for the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Championship, set to be held this October 4-17. In addition to crowning the confederation’s champion, the tournament also serves as qualifying for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, set to be held in France next summer.

The USL club’s venues will host the group stage of the tournament, with Group A set to be held in Cary, N.C. and Group B in Edinburg, Texas. The tournament’s final stage will be held at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, home of Major League Soccer’s FC Dallas. The two finalists and winner of the third-place playoff will be guaranteed a place at next year’s World Cup, with the fourth-place team to face a playoff against the third-place team from the 2018 Copa America Feminina for a berth at the event.

“We are excited to host the United States Women’s National Team in the Concacaf Women’s Championship at Sahlen’s Stadium in coordination with the Town of Cary,” said North Carolina Football Club President and General Manager Curt Johnson. “Our fans will have the opportunity to see the best players in the world, including several NC Courage players, as they compete in an important tournament to ultimately earn a FIFA Women’s World Cup berth.”

Both North Carolina FC and Rio Grande Valley FC have hosted major games at their venues already this year. NCFC played host to the U.S. Men’s National Team last month as the side took a 1-0 victory against Paraguay in an international exhibition, while the Toros played host to the first leg of the Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 game between Motagua of Honduras and Club Tijuana of Mexico in February.

The draw for the tournament will be held later this year, with Central American and Caribbean qualifying for the tournament set to occur in June and July respectively. The United States, Canada and Mexico are already guaranteed berths in the tournament’s field.
