FC Cincinnati shot-stopper’s double-save against Indy tops weekly award’s poll

TAMPA, Fla. – FC Cincinnati goalkeeper Evan Newton has earned the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 3 of the 2018 season as his outstanding double-save off a penalty kick against Indy Eleven this past Saturday took top spot in the weekly online poll.

The award is Newton’s second of the 2018 regular season, with the FCC newcomer having also claimed the honor in Week 1 for a reflex stop against the Charleston Battery. This past Saturday, Newton first made a fine diving stop to deny Indy’s Jack McInerney from the penalty spot and then recovered to save from Ben Speas on the rebound to help FCC take a 1-0 victory on the road at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Newton’s save earned 85 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Friday. The Charleston Battery’s Odisnel Cooper finished second for his full-stretch save that turned a shot by the New York Red Bulls II’s Steven Echeverria onto the crossbar, while Penn FC’s Romuald Peiser finished third for his diving save to deny Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC’s Ben Zemanski late in the Keystone Derby Cup clash between the Pennsylvania rivals.
