Lack of goals missing element in good displays to start season

PITTSBURGH – On another night, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC would have walked away with victory in its hope opener on Saturday against Keystone Derby Cup rivals Penn FC, but after the scoreless draw between the Pennsylvania rivals the Hounds are accentuating the need to take the chances they create ahead of Saturday’s game against Toronto FC II (2 p.m. ET | Match Center).

“I thought we had a good amount of opportunities, and we need to learn that they are valuable,” said Hounds midfielder Ben Zemanski on Tuesday. “They come few and far between sometimes, and you have to bury them to get three points at home.”

Zemanski’s late effort from the top of the penalty area was Pittsburgh’s last good chance to take its first victory of the season. A good save by Penn FC goalkeeper Romuald Peiser denied the veteran his first goal in Riverhounds SC colors, which followed other chances that had fallen previously to Romeo Parkes and Christiano Francois which also failed to find the net.

Despite the lack of goals in the first two games for the Hounds this season – the side having also put in a performance that saw it hit the post and force two good saves on the road against Nashville SC in its opening game of the regular season – the feeling that things will fall into place was still present as preparations for the visit to BMO Field began.

“The attitude was great,” said Zemanski. “There was obviously some disappointment after the game, but the guys showed up today ready to work. They put in a good attitude and a good shift. We’re going to put the work in this week to try and get a result here on Saturday.”

One area that Pittsburgh hasn’t struggled in is defensively, with goalkeeper Dan Lynd recording back-to-back shutouts behind a defensive unit that has required him to make only two saves in two games. The Hounds sit alongside Louisville City FC and FC Cincinnati as the only sides yet to concede in the early going as the organization at the back has quickly come together.

“We’ve had a couple different systems and we’ve looked very organized both times we’ve been out there,” said Lynd. “Hopefully that continues to grow throughout the season.”

With the likes of Hounds center back Joe Greenspan having already recorded 29 clearances in two games marshaling the back line, all that’s needed now is for the Hounds’ attack to click into gear.

“We want to score goals for the fans and put on a show,” said Zemanski. “From one to the last roster position on this team, we have a good talented team and were expected to do great things here.”
