SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC fired home four second-half goals to earn a 5-1 victory against Tulsa Roughnecks FC in the final preseason outing for both clubs on Saturday afternoon at Toyota Field. Jose Escalante scored twice for the hosts, who also got goals from Kris Tyrpak, Ever Guzman and Alex Bruce in the win.
“Overall preseason has gone well for us,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “We've progressed from week to week and today was no different. We wanted to get out on the front foot and Tulsa made it difficult for us. But we managed to get a couple of goals in quick succession and that made the score line look more comfortable than it actually was.”
Both teams had chances to break the deadlock in the first half, but with five minutes to go before the break Tyrpak opened the scoring as he converted a counterattack opportunity set up by Cesar Elizondo. Ryan Roushandel forced an early save in the second half for San Antonio, but then the hosts got two goals in two minutes to take control of the contest.
Escalante set up the first, stealing possession from a defender before setting up Guzman to slot home his finish in the 64th minute. Less than 60 seconds later Escalante had the first of his two goals on the game as he roofed a half-volleyed finish from a pass by Elizondo to make it three. The former Honduran U20 international then notched his second directly from a free kick in the 72nd minute, shooting low into the left corner of the net around the wall.

SAFC added a fifth with six minutes to go as Bruce capitalized on a good piece of play by Omar Gordon when the Jamaican stole possession before driving into the penalty area and centered for the young forward to finish. The Roughnecks pulled a goal back through Joaquin Rivas in the final minute, but it was precious little consolation as the side looked ahead to its season-opener on the road against OKC Energy FC next Saturday. San Antonio, meanwhile, will have been buoyed by its largest margin of victory this preseason as it visits Sacramento Republic FC in the opening weekend of the season.
