INDIANAPOLIS – Zach Steinberger may be a California native, but when the midfielder was announced as Indy Eleven’s latest signing on Thursday evening it had all the feeling of a homecoming.

After a standout career at Butler University, say nothing with a prior loan spell in Indy from the Houston Dynamo earlier in his career, Indianapolis has become like a second home for the attacking midfielder.

“I felt very fortunate to play in front of my college hometown fans and in front of the best fan-base in North American soccer when I came here on loan,” said Steinberger. “It’s amazing now to see where the club is today. It’s a testament to what the club is doing right. I hope to mimic Indy Eleven’s progress as an organization with my progress on the field.”

Steinberger was a 2013 All-Big East First Team selection for the Bulldogs as a junior and had 14 goals and 14 assists in 63 appearances overall in his time at the school. In addition to his college achievements Steinberger also shone in the Premier Development League, helping the Michigan Bucks claim the PDL Championship in 2014 as he earned All-League honors.

After being selected by the Dynamo in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, Steinberger returned to Indianapolis on loan during his rookie season and scored his two first professional goals for Indy against Jacksonville Armada FC. After spending the past two seasons playing for the Armada, the 25-year-old’s experience is going to be a big plus as he returns to the Eleven on a permanent deal.

“Zach Steinberger will be a huge asset to the 2018 team,” said Indy Head Coach Martin Rennie. “His professional career really began in Indianapolis and I can’t wait to see what he brings to the team with his reputation as a dangerous goal-scoring player.”
