HOUSTON – Rio Grande Valley FC standout Eric Bird was signed by the club’s Major League Soccer partner the Houston Dynamo on Friday, the fifth current member of the Dynamo’s squad to have competed previously for the Toros.

Bird recorded four goals and three assists over 29 appearances in his second season for the Toros, as the 24-year-old midfielder recorded 33 key passes and a passes-per-90 minutes rate of 43.2 over the regular season. Bird had been a key figure when the Toros reached the 2016 USL Cup Playoffs as the second-placed finisher in the Western Conference in his first season at the club.

A former standout at the University of Virginia, Bird had previously competed in the USL for the Harrisburg City Islanders on loan from the Philadelphia Union. The Virginia Beach, Va. native has made 55 appearances in the USL over his career, and also made his debut for the Dynamo in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup this past summer after signing a short-term agreement with the MLS club that saw him start a pair of games for Houston.

Bird joins defenders George Malki and Kevin Garcia, and midfielders Memo Rodriguez and Charlie Ward in joining the Dynamo from the Toros, with the hybrid relationship between the two clubs continuing to pay dividends for both organizations.
