SAFC looks to wrap up second in South Texas Derby

SAN ANTONIO – With second place in the USL Western Conference still on offer for San Antonio FC with a victory, another entertaining South Texas Derby looms as SAFC welcomes Rio Grande Valley FC to Toyota Field for a 7:30 p.m. CT kickoff on Saturday night.

San Antonio FC news and notes

  • Current record: 16-4-11, 59pts

  • San Antonio earned a 2-1 win against the Portland Timbers 2 on Wednesday night at Toyota Field to move into second place in the Western Conference with one game remaining in the regular season.

  • Ever Guzman scored his second goal in as many games to put SAFC, but after T2 had equalized late in the first half the first goal of the season by Ryan Roushandel sent SAFC past T2 with 19 minutes to go. 

  • SAFC has lost just one match at home this year, coming in the last South Texas Derby on September 23rd when Jose Escalante scored the only goal of the game for the Toros.

  • San Antonio's Diego Restrepo will try to equal Brandon Miller's single-season record of 13 shutouts on Saturday night, but has recorded only one clean sheet in San Antonio's past five games. 

Rio Grande Valley FC news and notes

  • Current record: 9-14-8, 41pts

  • Rio Grande Valley FC fell 2-0 to Phoenix Rising FC last Saturday night at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex in its last outing.

  • The Toros saw goals in either half by Rising FC send them to defeat as they themselves only recorded three shots on goal out of a total of 16 shots for the game.

  • RGVFC's Justin Bilyeu has recorded eight assists this season, including his time with the New York Red Bulls II early in the year, to sit tied for sixth in the USL.

  • The Toros have struggled to create scoring chances consistently this season, with their total of 234 the fourth-fewest in the league, and an average of only 7.5 per game.

Series Notes

  • RGVFC holds a dominant lead in the all-time series in the South Texas Derby with a 4-1-1 record. SAFC’s only win came in the season opener this year, a 1-0 win on March 26 at H-E-B Park, with San Antonio still yet to beat the Toros on their home turf at Toyota Field.
