San Antonio looks for second place against Portland

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC takes on the Portland Timbers 2 on Wednesday night at Toyota Field knowing that a win will guarantee a top-three finish in the USL Western Conference and put the side in pole position to finish as the No. 2-seed in the West for the USL Cup Playoffs. The match, which was rescheduled from Aug. 26 because of Hurricane Harvey, will kick off at 7:30 p.m. CT.

San Antonio FC news and notes

  • Current record: 15-4-11, 56pts

  • San Antonio grabbed a 1-1 draw against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in an entertaining match this past Saturday night to open a three-game home stand to close the regular season.

  • SAFC struck late to earn a point as the equalizer from Ever Guzman arrived in the 88th minute. The goal was Guzman's first for the club since arriving in August.

  • San Antonio has notched the second-lowest conversion rate of big chances in the USL, with the side sitting at a 34.69 percent success rate according to OPTA, which acounts for the side sitting in the lower-half of the USL with 40 goals in 30 games this regular season.

  • SAFC would move one point ahead of Reno 1868 FC with a victory on Wednesday night as it makes up its game in hand on the current second-place side in the Western Conference.

  • San Antonio goalkeeper Diego Restrepo is still within range of setting a USL single-season record for shutouts, but would need to post a clean sheet in each of the side's final two games to surpass Brandon Miller's record of 13 in the 2015 season.

Portland Timbers 2 news and notes

  • Current record: 3-21-6, 15pts

  • T2 suffered a dramatic 3-2 loss to the LA Galaxy II on Saturday night at the StubHub Center Track and Field Stadium in its most recent outing.

  • After Portland took the lead through Giovanni Calixtro in the 14th minute, the Galaxy II took the lead with goals either side of a red card to T2 defender Lamar Batista. T2 equalized in the 88th minute through Max Ornstil, seemingly grabbing a point, but Los Dos notched a stoppage-time winner to send Portland to a third loss in its last four outings.

  • With just 25 goals, T2 has the third-fewest goals in the USL this season. The side has struggled consistently in front of goal this year, scoring on just 8.4 percent of its chances this season, the lowest rate in the USL.

  • Portland goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh remains among the leaders in saves in the USL this season, sitting tied for third in the league with 90 denials including three penalty-kick saves.
