Forbes, O’Ojong score in 2-0 road win for San Antonio

TULSA, Okla.San Antonio FC took a big step forward in its quest to clinch a home game in the 2017 USL Cup Playoffs, as it recorded a 2-0 victory against Tulsa Roughnecks FC at ONEOK Field on Saturday evening. Nkongho O’Ojong scored the first goal of the match during the 70th minute, heading in a corner kick from Michael Reed. Billy Forbes, who has enjoyed a strong season for San Antonio, netted the second goal for the road side in the 88th minute. Tulsa had multiple chances of its own to score on the night, but goalkeeper Diego Restrepo came up with key saves to record the shutout. With the result, Tulsa moves to 13-11-5 this campaign, while San Antonio is now 14-4-11 overall.

Scoring:
70’ – SA – Nkongho O’Ojong (Michael Reed)
88’ – SA – Billy Forbes (Owayne Omar Gordon)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Saturday’s match between Tulsa and San Antonio had the intensity of a playoff meeting, as end-to-end action kept fans at ONEOK Field engaged until the final whistle. Goalkeepers Fabian Cerda and Restrepo each made quality saves, O’Ojong and Forbes scored quality goals and tensions flared on a few occasions – with both sides aiming for better positioning in the playoff picture with just a few games remaining in the regular season. If Saturday was a sign of things to come, fans can expect must-see action.

  • 2. San Antonio will be happy with the victory for a number of reasons. Most importantly, though, it ends the club’s two-game winless run and positions them comfortably in the top four of the Western Conference. A home playoff match inches closer with each point earned down the stretch, and clinching that is now more attainable with San Antonio’s final three matches of the regular season set to be played at Toyota Field.

  • 3. Tulsa will rue not finishing some of its chances against San Antonio, but the club is still in a comfortable spot in the Western Conference. Roughnecks FC still remains in playoff position with three matches remaining in its regular season, including a showdown against contender Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Oct. 14. The club could clinch a spot in the postseason before that match, though, alleviating some of the pressure that could be on the club by then.
