Charlotte's Estrada scores as club records 1-1 draw vs. OCB

MATTHEWS, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence’s undefeated run at the Sportsplex at Matthews continued on Saturday, as they tied Orlando City B 1-1. Hadji Barry netted the opening goal of the game for OCB, scoring from the penalty spot in the fifth minute of action. However, Charlotte’s David Estrada responded two minutes later from inside the box. Alex Martinez had a great opportunity to give the Independence the lead before the break, but his low strike from inside the box went straight into the hands of OCB goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. With the draw, the Independence move to 12-4-8 on the season, while Orlando is now 7-6-11 this campaign.

Scoring:
5’ – ORL – Hadji Barry (PK)
7’ – CLT – David Estrada (Joel Johnson)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. There’s no place like home, and that’s especially true for the Independence, who are now 5-0-2 at the Sportsplex at Matthews. The North Carolina-based club has thrived at home this season, recording a 6-1-4 overall record at two venues. With eight games remaining in the regular season, the Independence have five games at the Sportsplex at Matthews as they look to clinch the top spot in the Eastern Conference.
  • 2. While the draw may be seen as a positive for the Independence, OCB can also walk away from Saturday’s match with its head held high. Not many teams come away from the Sportsplex at Matthews with a point, and Orlando was able to do just that. Barry’s conversion from the spot in the fifth minute of play gives the club hope of achieving a spot above the red line in the Eastern Conference playoff hunt.
  • 3. Enzo Martinez, as well as David Estrada, created multiple scoring chances throughout the match, as the Independence controlled the possession and overall pace of the game. Martinez had five chances created on the evening while also completing 82.5 percent of his passes – including seven long passes. While the Independence held 64.1 percent of the possession, OCB was able to frustrate the home side by making 26 total clearances.

USLSoccer.com Man of the Match:
