OTTAWA – It took less than 24 minutes for newcomer Azake Luboyera to make his presence felt for Ottawa Fury FC as the youngster’s header proved to be the decisive strike in a 2-0 win over Toronto FC II at TD Place on Saturday. Luboyera’s goal came off a first half set piece and was followed by a moment of brilliance from Sito Seoane in the 75th minute that all but assured Fury FC its sixth win of the season (6-6-6, 24pts) and first over its Canadian rivals. TFCII, which had shutout Ottawa in the first two meetings between the sides, fell in the final installment of the Battle of Ontario this season to move to 3-12-5 overall (14pts).

Scoring:
24’ – OTT – Azake Luboyera (Gerardo Bruna)
75’ – OTT – Sito Seoane (Jonathan Barden)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. It was a dream debut for the 19-year-old Ugandan Luboyera, who was officially announced as a member of the squad on July 20. Hailed for this scoring ability and creativity by head coach Paul Dalglish upon his introduction, the Ugandan U20 International wasted little time in acquainting the home supporters with his attacking prowess, finding the space to get on the end of an out-swinging corner from Gerardo Bruna and rifling a header past Mark Pais despite his diminutive 5-foot-7 frame. For a Fury FC squad that has registered six goals in the last five games – scored by six different players – the injection of another dynamic presence could help the side move onto the right side of the playoff line.

  • 2. Seoane added the insurance with a brilliant turn and half volley from nearly 40 yards out, catching Pais off his line. The goal was undoubtedly a moment to remember for those in attendance but more importantly, the result moved Fury FC’s home unbeaten streak to six; a stretch that extends back to May 13. Ottawa has recorded four victories at TD Place during that period but was coming off back-to-back draws against Rochester and New York Red Bulls II. Bethlehem Steel FC and the Charlotte Independence will make the trip across the border over the next two weeks as Paul Daglish’s side wraps up a four-game homestand before heading on the road for a challenging three-game run that includes visits to Orlando, Tampa Bay and Cincinnati.

  • 3. The shutout was the sixth of the season for Canadian-born keeper Callum Irving but visiting Toronto was only able to manage a single shot on goal, which came in the 62nd minute. The performance extended a current 287-minute scoreless streak for TFCII that dates back to Luca Uccello’s winner in the 73rd minute of the previous meeting with Ottawa. Jason Bent’s young side now owns a -18 goal differential on the road in 2017 but will get the chance to host the Eastern Conference-leading Charleston Battery next week at the Ontario Soccer Centre where Toronto has only allowed nine goals in eight appearances this season.
