OTTAWA – Alphonso Davies, the youngest goal-scorer in USL history, was among 13 players with USL experience named on Tuesday to Canada’s 40-man preliminary roster for the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The announcement followed the announcement earlier in the day by the Canadian Soccer Association that Davies had taken the Oath of Citizenship at his Canadian Citizenship Ceremony.

“I am really excited to be called into Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team,” Davies said. “Canada Soccer worked extremely hard to get me where I am right now and I am very grateful. I am really glad they took their time and put the effort in me in helping me get my citizenship.”

Davies became the youngest signing in the USL’s history when he joined Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 as a 15-year-old prior to the start of the 2016 USL season. He became the youngest scorer in league history in a 4-3 victory against the LA Galaxy II on May 15, and subsequently was signed to an MLS contract midseason.

The 16-year-old Davies is joined in the 40-man squad by fellow Whitecaps midfielder and 2016 USL 20 Under 20 selection Marco Bustos, who has recorded 17 goals in the USL since the start of the 2015 season. Also named is Louisville City FC’s Mark-Anthony Kaye, who previously earned his first call-up to the full national team for next Tuesday’s international exhibition against Curacao, and Tyler Pasher, who helped the Swope Park Rangers reach the 2016 USL Cup Final prior to joining Sporting Kansas City this offseason.

Other players with USL experience named to the squad include former Toronto FC II standout Raheem Edwards, who finished tied for the team-high with six goals last season in the USL before becoming one of Major League Soccer’s breakout performers in 2017. Montreal Impact goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, midfielder David Choiniere and forward Anthony Jackson-Hamel, all of whom featured in the USL over the past two seasons, were also named in the squad.
