SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC and the Swope Park Rangers played to a 0-0 draw on Saturday night at Toyota Field as the Rangers almost grabbed victory late after their hosts were reduced to 10 men. Swope Park (4-4-1, 13pts) had the first real chance in the fifth minute as a quickly-taken free kick gave a chance to Nansel Selbol inside the right side of the penalty area, but SAFC goalkeeper Diego Restrepo saved well. Selbol also fired over eight minutes later, while San Antonio’s Billy Forbes forced a save by SPR goalkeeper David Greczek midway through the half. Neither side was able to create many clear scoring opportunities as the game moved into the second half, however, and it took until 10 minutes to go when a tight-angle shot by SAFC’s Ben Newnam was parried away by Greczek. San Antonio (9-0-3, 30pts) was reduced to 10 men with eight minutes to go when Greg Cochrane was sent off, and the Rangers almost made the hosts pay late as a shot by Louis Bennett was headed over the crossbar at the top of the six-yard area by SAFC defender Stephen McCarthy. Honors ended even, however, as San Antonio’s shutout streak reached six games.

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Saturday’s second game of the home-and-home series between San Antonio and Swope Park bore very little resemblance to the affair last week at Children’s Mercy Victory Field, as SAFC proved much more aggressive on their home turf as the hosts looked to complete the sweep of the series. While San Antonio remained undefeated, the win it sought didn’t materialize as the play in the final third either went lacking, or was well read by a Swope Park defense that sniffed out danger well to limit SAFC’s clear chances, and earn a valuable road point.

  • 2. San Antonio remains undefeated, and recorded its sixth consecutive shutout in the process, but the team’s lack of attacking punch in recent games has to be starting to become a concern for Head Coach Darryl Powell. SAFC has now only recorded three goals in its past five league games, while also being shut out in midweek as it was eliminated from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Dropping to second in the Western Conference behind Real Monarchs SLC on Saturday night, the attack needs to pick up as the side visits OKC Energy FC next Saturday.

  • 3. Swope Park wasn’t able to take revenge for its defeat last week, although it went close early and late to breaking San Antonio’s shutout streak through good finishes by Nansel Selbol and Louis Bennett that were denied. Getting a point on the road with an altered lineup that in particular saw Amer Didic absent due to his signing with Sporting Kansas City and Lebo Moloto’s absence from the squad will likely be adequate to the side’s needs as it saw some solid performances by their replacements.

Stephen McCarthy, San Antonio FC – McCarthy made three clearances and one interception on the game, but his blocked shot late to preserve the shutout and earn a point was the biggest moment of the game.
