OTTAWA, ON – The Richmond Kickers’ defense had not conceded more than one goal in a match all season, but Ottawa Fury FC bucked that trend with authority Saturday at TD Place. Fury FC’s Sito Seoane did most of the damage with a first-half brace, but it ended up being a second-half surge with three unanswered goals for a 5-3 win. Lance Rozeboom, Tucker Hume and Jimmy Shammar Sanon scored in succession, with Hume’s tally serving as the winner as Fury FC rallied from a 3-2 deficit. Ottawa has won back-to-back matches in league play for the first time this year, following up its 4-3 score line on the road against the New York Red Bulls II. Having also posted a first-leg win against Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC in the semifinals of the Canadian Championship, Fury FC maintains some strong momentum heading into Wednesday’s second leg at BMO Field. Ottawa improves to 3-3-3 (12 points) overall and earns its first home win in USL action, moving to 1-1-2. Richmond, which looked like it could steal a full three road points thanks to Alhaji Kamara’s hat trick, stays winless on the road at 0-3-2 and falls to 2-5-4 (10 points) overall.

Scoring:
9’ – OTT – Sito Seoane
34’ – RIC – Alhaji Kamara (Fred Owusu Sekyere)
38’ – OTT – Sito Seoane (Jamar Dixon)
49’ – RIC – Alhaji Kamara (Jackson Eskay)
59’ – RIC – Alhaji Kamara (Fred Owusu Sekyere)
69’ – OTT – Lance Rozeboom
73’ – OTT – Tucker Hume (Ryan Williams)
90’+1 – OTT – Jimmy Shammar Sanon (Jonathan Barden)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. If not for a stoppage-time tally, Fury FC provided nearly a carbon copy of its 4-3 victory at the New York Red Bulls II. Richmond looked to be in great shape in the early moments of the second half, but the host side stepped up down the stretch. Captain Lance Rozeboom notched a 69th-minute equalizer; his initial shot ricocheted back to him and Rozeboom didn’t miss his second chance, slotting inside the right post to tie things up at 3-3. Fury FC could have gained the lead with a Ryan Williams penalty kick, but Kickers goalkeeper Matt Turner stuffed his 72nd-minute attempt. Ottawa did not ease off the pedal. Williams delivered the free kick cross from the right, connecting with Tucker Hume for the 4-3 advantage in the 73rd minute. Jimmy Shammar Sanon provided the cherry on top with a one-on-one finish against Turner, slotting his shot at the near right post to cap off the goal-scoring frenzy.

  • 2. Richmond’s front line had certainly been one of the most stagnant in the league from a finishing standpoint. Alhaji Kamara finally filled that void for the Kickers. It marked the first hat trick recorded at TD Place and the first for Richmond since George Davis IV on April 28, 2015, against the Charlotte Independence. Kamara’s efforts also provided Richmond with the most goals scored since a 3-0 win against Toronto FC II on July 23, 2016. Normally, that is enough ammunition for a Kickers defense that had not allowed multiple goals in a game all season. It was not meant to be Saturday though.

  • 3. Before the second-half fireworks, Ottawa’s Sito Seoane was the story for the host side, recording a pair of first-half goals. He had also has scored a goal during the second half of Ottawa’s road win against the New York Red Bulls II. His most impressive tally was in the ninth minute as he and Ryan Williams made a strong push to earn a free kick just a couple yards outside the box. Seoane blasted his shot through the Kickers’ wall and inside the left post past Turner for a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute.
