NORMAN, Okla. – OKC Energy FC’s start to the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup didn’t go as planned in the opening 15 minutes.

Everything afterward, though, was sweet success.

Alex Dixon tallied two goals and Energy FC had a massive second-half burst that propelled the side to a dominant 5-1 victory against Moreno Valley Futbol Club (Calif.) in the Second Round of the Open Cup on Wednesday at John Crain Field.

With the win, OKC advances to the Third Round to face fellow USL side Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on May 31 at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs, Colo. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. ET. The Switchbacks advanced with a 2-0 victory against the Premier Development League’s FC Tucson.

OKC fell behind in the 15th minute, but it took Dixon just three minutes to find the equalizer off of a Luis Martinez assist.

Things stayed that way until the second half, when Energy FC was playing up a man after Moreno Valley’s Edgar Gonzalez was sent off in the 65th minute.

Shortly thereafter, Energy FC rattled four goals in a six-minute stretch: Wojciech Wojcik in the 68th on a go-ahead header, Dixon with his brace in the 69th minute, Andy Craven – in his return to OKC – in the 72nd minute and Miguel Gonzalez in the 74th.

Moreno Valley could never recover to get back into the match, and Javier Castro picked up a second caution in the 83rd minute as Energy FC was never threatened down the stretch.

Here are the recaps from the USL’s other Western Conference sides from Wednesday’s Second Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup:

San Antonio FC (USL) 2, Dutch Lions (NPSL) 1: At Dutch Lions FC Soccer Facility in Conroe, Texas, SAFC tallied twice in the first half and held off the Dutch Lions down the stretch. Victor Araujo scored off a direct free kick in the 17th minute and Aly Hassan scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 41st minute, capitalizing off of a Dutch Lions mistake in the back. Nate Coons put the host side on the score sheet in the 62nd minute, but that’s as close as the Dutch Lions would get. SAFC will now travel to Tulsa, Okla., to face fellow USL side Tulsa Roughnecks FC in the Third Round at Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium on May 31.

Phoenix Rising FC (USL), 3, Fresno Fuego (PDL) 1: At Fresno State Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium in Fresno, Calif., Kody Wakasa and Jason Johnson scored in the span of a couple minutes in the first half to lead Phoenix past the host Fuego. Wakasa scored off of a corner kick in the 33rd minute and Johnson provided a 35th-minute finish from the right of the box to take a 2-0 lead. Rising FC’s Mike Seth pushed the lead to three in the 54th minute with his tap-in from just above the six-yard area, but Fresno finally had a response with Felipe Sousa’s score in the 59th minute. Phoenix will next travel to face the San Francisco Deltas in the Third Round on May 31 at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.

Orange County SC (USL), 5, FC Golden State Force (PDL) 2: At Citrus College in Glendora, Calif., Victor Pineda and Monday Etim helped build a two-goal cushion in the opening 15 minutes to pace OCSC. Pineda’s sixth-minute tally got visiting Orange County on the score sheet and Etim tallied nine minutes later. FC Golden State and OCSC traded penalty kick goals within a minute’s time, the latter being from Orange County’s Jerry Van Ewijk to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. Wuilito Fernandes was the story in the second half, recording a brace in the final 45 minutes to put the match out of reach for FC Golden State. OCSC will next travel to face L.A. Wolves FC (Calif.) in the Third Round on 10:30 p.m. ET on May 31 at Azusa Pacific University Soccer Field in Azusa, Calif.

Sacramento Republic FC (USL) 4, Anahuac FC (Nev.) 0: At Papa Murphy’s Park in Sacramento, Calif., Harry Williams quickly asserted himself with a first-half brace to lead SAFC past Anahuac. Williams netted goals in the 12th and 15th minutes to put the host side up in the early going. Wilson Kneeshaw put things away when he converted a second-half penalty kick in the 66th minute, and Daniel Trickett-Smith pushed the lead to four in the closing minutes with a volley inside the left post. Sacramento will next host fellow USL side Reno 1868 FC in the Third Round on May 31 at Papa Murphy's Park.

Reno 1868 FC (USL) 1, OSA FC (NPSL) 1 (4-3 PKs): At Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Wash., USL expansion side Reno fell behind early, but rallied to force overtime and then prevailed in a penalty kick shootout. Dembakwi Yomba tallied a 30th-minute equalizer off of a Cameron Vickers assist to offset an OSA FC goal in the 17th minute. The match stayed that way through regulation and the two 15-minute overtimes, going to a penalty shootout. One year removed from his PDL days with Midland/Odessa Sockers FC, goalkeeper Russell Klabough stepped up for Reno, saving the first PK attempt by OSA FC in the shootout. Junior Burgos ultimately put away the decisive PK. Reno will next travel to face Sacramento Republic FC on May 31 in the Third Round.
